Ever wondered what the inside of a Rolex Submariner looks like, then (sensibly) thought better of it? Well wonder no more. The Watches TV has teamed up with The Naked Watchmaker, Peter Speake-Marin, to take a modern Rolex Submariner completely apart – diving right into this famous diver’s watch.

The Naked Watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin deconstructing a Rolex Submariner

Speake-Marin also explains a little of  the history and technology of the Submariner as he strips down the Rolex Caliber 3130 to show us what it’s made of. For those of us with less dexterity and horological talent, this is a fascinating study, aptly and beautifully narrated by the British watchmaker.

The video is in two parts and even though they are lengthy Rolex fans are likely to be wishing for more.

Others just don’t fancy them – I, for instance, have several more expensive watches (ALS, 2 Breguets and 2 JLCs) and have never been attracted by any of the Rolex offerings.

Rolex is actually not really a luxury brand. It’s the equivalent of maybe a Mercedes (nice, but not the quintessence of luxury). There are watch brands out there allowing consumers to spend up to and over $1m USD for a single timepiece.

I would submit that most people who want a Rolex actually own a Rolex.

Just as well, you can buy a Bugatti veyron or a Ferrari gto as the quintessential sports car but who’s going to or able to do that except for far and few? Rolex offers many styles besides their sports line. Cellini for example. Many of their chronographs for another example are quite exquisite. You must be only considering the “sports” line. But hey, to each his/her own.

The no date submariner is a classic example of beauty and simplicity. Most Rolex owners have probably never seen the movement in their watch. Thank you for sharing the superb Rolex craftsmanship in this professional video. I will be looking forward to the second part.

Thanks for commenting, Robert! The second part of this video is also to be found in this post. I waited to post my story until both were published by The Watches TV.

Great video, however, I’ve never seen a watch maker remove the bezel (ceramic ) and the crystal.
Other than that. This guy would make a great instructor.

I know it’s a little late but had to comment. Everyone has different taste. You did not have to like Rolex. But to say they are second rate he’s just wrong. I think Peter Speak Marin Knows a thing or two about watches And his comments during the deconstruction say it all
