Michael Jordan Wearing His Custom Urwerk UR-220 Falcon Project
by Nick Gould
In watch circles, the basketball icon is known for his taste in choosing timepieces from less common brands. For example, he wore a platinum A. Lange & Söhne Datograph with matching bracelet back in 2002 before the Glashütte-based brand was widely known to most watch aficionados.
Jordan was an early adopter of independent watchmaker Urwerk, founded by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei. Urwerk is known for its futuristic-looking timepieces that display the time using rotating satellites.
While browsing photos from the last couple of months, I noticed Jordan wore two of his Urwerks to two NASCAR Cup Series races. Jordan owns the 23XI Racing team, which fields the number 23 car for driver Bubba Wallace. Wallace is currently the only Black American participating in NASCAR’s three national series (Cup, Xfinity, and Truck).
It was a photo from the Toyota/Save Mart 350 race at Sonoma Raceway on June 6, 2021 that especially caught my attention.
Jordan was wearing a Urwerk that I hadn’t seen on his wrist before: the UR-220 Falcon Project released in 2020. The unique case shape combined with the pattern of the CPT carbon material jumped out at me along with the satellite time indication.
I first posted the photos on my Instagram account (@niccoloy) and received a couple of messages informing me that this wasn’t a regular Falcon Project piece.
As you can see from the photos, the watch has a unique color palette of blue accents for the minute display compared to green on the regular version. I was also told the watch was a limited run of 23 pieces and has XXIII engraved on it.
Why “23”? That was Jordan’s jersey number for the Chicago Bulls, a number now associated with him.
It is great to see Michael Jordan purchasing timepieces that are very different from others on the market highlighting that he has a great eye for watches with special aesthetics.
