Welcome to the 2015 Quill & Pad Baselworld “awards,” in which we highlight a few of the watches and ancillary Baselworld potpourri that caught our eyes at the world’s largest watch exhibition. Please accept these citations in the way they are presented: generally tongue-in-cheek, sometimes serious, always fun!
From the word “go,” the SIHH (Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie) was an entirely different beast than what I was expecting, especially after having attended Baselworld as both a spectator and a journalist. From my experiences at Baselworld I expected the SIHH to be just another trade show, perhaps with a dash more glamour. But I was wrong . . . and for all the wrong reasons.
Cumberbatch portrays Alan Turing in the film “The Imitation Game”. Turing was instrumental to the Allied effort during World War II by leading a group of English mathematicians working at Bletchley Park to crack the German Enigma codes. Have a look at the Turing statue wearing a Bremont Victory for a brief second. What a fitting tribute!
Quill & Pad speaks with Guillaume de Seynes, member of the Hermès family and now managing director in charge of manufacturing and equity investments, to understand the brand’s corporate philosophies and history in watches a little better. De Seynes, previously in charge of the timepiece division, was the force behind supplier acquisitions such as the group’s stake in movement maker Vaucher.
The world can be very confusing. But confusion is a tricky concept, with a medical definition to match. For this reason, it should come as no surprise that when I first saw the Ludovic Ballouard Upside Down I had a moment of total confusion. I didn’t even know what was confusing me, I just felt like something was wrong. And then I noticed it: all the numbers were upside down.
The immaculately finished Glashütte Original PanoMaticInverse is a poetic ode to the three-quarter plate typical of German watchmaking. Perfectly befitting the “made in Germany” aesthetic and demand on quality, this intriguing wristwatch’s ingenious movement contains unexpected technical elements in addition to what might well be termed a permanent state of #CasebackThursday.
Ulysse Nardin’s main introduction for Baselworld was not a watch. It was a component. This is probably one reason why the introduction of the new Ulysse Anchor Escapement was so surprising; I would have expected it to come together with the haptic treat of a full horological experience, i.e. a timepiece to touch, feel and enjoy.
Right now the world turns its collective eyes to what is perhaps the one event that, despite political and social issues, has the power to unite: the Olympic Games. And not only in our little world of ticks and tocks does the world take note that one of the main sponsors is the watch brand Omega.
