If you are in New York this month (July 2017) the news is everywhere you look: the Patek Philippe Art of Watches Grand Exhibition opens on July 13, 2017. Also not to be missed is a Christie’s Patek Philippe private sale and exhibition, as well as an online auction, that will run at the same time as the Grand Exhibition, allowing consumers the opportunity to purchase rare, unique, and beautiful Patek Philippe watches after having learned about them.
One “even more unique” watch to be auctioned at Only Watch 2017 was neither conceived and developed by a watch brand nor by a company that makes watches. It was developed by a ‘Band of Brothers’ from WOSTEP, an international watchmaking school in Neuchâtel, Switzerland that trains watchmakers from all over the world.
The first weekend of November 2016 was a big one for me: in addition to attending the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève, I collected not one, not two, but three spectacular watches. The watch I left home certain to bring back was one that I had been waiting patiently for since January 2016: the split-seconds chronograph Reference 5370P from Patek Philippe. Here’s why I bought it.
As the saying goes, “There’s an ass for every seat.” I still find it so hard to believe that some watch designs are ever even considered, much less actually produced and ultimately purchased. In fairness, the following list may not actually contain the five ugliest watches ever, but they sure aren’t easy on the eyes.
A piece that for me is a long-term keeper, is the wonderful Antiqua by Vianney Halter. The truth is that I fell for the Antiqua when I first saw one more than a dozen years ago; while many of my friends will freely confess that at the time they were at first put off by its looks, I was smitten from the start. In this article I look at why high end watches cost so much by examining one of the most important factors. To answer this question, there are quite a few reasons, including low production numbers (mass manufacture brings prices down) and high complexity, but the one I will focus on here is hand-finishing, because unlike low production numbers and high complexity, ultra-high-level hand-finishing is not usually easy to appreciate.
