Meet The Struthers: English Watchmaking The Old-Fashioned Way . . . Sort Of

When you walk into the Struthers’s Birmingham workshop, you feel like you could be stepping a century back into the history of horology. Until you spy a few of Rebecca Struthers’s tattoos, that is. And then you know you are in the here and now. Meet Craig and Rebecca Struthers: two modern watchmakers doing things the old-fashioned way. Sort of.

Book Review: ‘George Daniels, A Master Watchmaker & His Art’ By Michael Clerizo

George Daniels is a polarizing and fascinating figure. Several years ago, Michael Clerizo took it upon himself to spend the amount of time with Daniels needed in order to write a detailed book about his life, and the outcome is a pure joy to read with well thought-out words, logical organization, and gorgeous photos. I heartily recommend this tome to anyone interested in horology, and as a holiday gift as well!

Blood Moons, Lunar Tetrads, And The Andreas Strehler Sauterelle À Lune Perpétuelle (Archive)

The Andreas Strehler Sauterelle à Lune Perpétuelle contains a moon phase mechanism that will only need adjustment by one full day every 14,189.538 years. And not only does the Lune Perpétuelle have an extremely accurate moon phase, but with the help of the constant force mechanism it is even more accurate for the little intervals as well.

Design Freedom + Affordable Luxury: Gorilla Fastback By Octavio Garcia & Lukas Gopp

Creative freedom is what almost all designers yearn for. Which is why Octavio Garcia and Lukas Gopp, both previously of Audemars Piguet, have joined independent forces to create a new micro brand: Gorilla. Here is the first watch born of that union, one that is aimed at the WIS in all of us, but remains affordable.

Gustafsson & Sjögren (GoS) Introduces Sarek And, Surprisingly, A First Ladies’ Watch

Back at Baselworld 2016, the duo known as Gustaffson & Sjögren (GoS) surprised me with a new watch named Sarek. Its most obvious element is, of course, the beautiful dial made of Damascus steel. The Sarek dial is created from 164 layers of hand-forged steel. The unusual coloring is partially achieved by tempering the steel until the desired colors display.

Photo Caption Competition No. 19: A Horological Fairground

Believe it or not, this Rube Goldberg/Jean Tinguely-style contraption is actually an astronomical clock by A.H.C.I. member Miki Eleta that displays retrograde minutes, jumping hours, day of the week, a three-dimensional moon phase, and world time. And it’s all regulated by Eleta’s own constant force gravity tourbillon with chronometer escapement.

But the question I’m asking here is: what might this assembly of gears be and/or be doing if it wasn’t a clock? Please leave your ideas (fun or funny also welcome) in the comments.

It’s Transparently Brilliant! HM6 SV By MB&F

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the MB&F HM6, but, it does have a serious design issue: except for that flying tourbillon, the incredible movement is hidden under a protective titanium case. And what a pity: it’s as if only half of the watch was available to be appreciated. The case shape reflects the movement architecture, but the movement architecture is concealed by the case . . . or it was until HM6 SV came along!
