While the two most well known German brands are A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original, there are quite a few smaller German brands deserving our attention. Some with names you may have heard of, a few you may not have: Nomos, Lange & Heyne, Tutima, Kudoke and Leinfelder among them.

The political scene in Germany currently shares a number of issues with other countries around the world, including the rise of the extreme right. As part of the new lineup for 2019, Nomos Glashütte introduced the Tangente Sport neomatik 42 date at Baselworld 2019. With an impressive water resistance of 300 meters (1,000 feet), a screw-down crown, and the brand’s first metal bracelet, this new Tangente proves to be a “good sport” in a variety of ways.
Quill & Pad’s editor-in-chief, Elizabeth Doerr, and resident gentleman, Martin Green, spontaneously decided to take a small road trip to test out some watches for a day and do a little sightseeing. They chose Cologne, Germany, and took two automobile-themed watches with them: the Chopard Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition and the Nomos Glashütte Autobahn. Can something that is highly functional also be art? If there is one brand that has proven — at least in watches — that functional objects can be art it is Nomos. The German company’s designs can are minimalistic, which leads to enormous focus on every minuscule detail. The ‘De Stijl’ version offered by Ace Jewelers in Amsterdam takes all of this even further in a limited edition that costs no more than the regular collection edition.
In Martin Green’s opinion, one of the most incredible qualities of Nomos is that they know how to make a small detail have large impact. The Orion Neomatic 41 Date New Black has hands and the numerals on the date disc in gold and that makes a big statement.
