Hermès Introduces New 2020 Slim d’Hermès GMT: Traveling In Style

by Sabine Zwettler

The Hermès universe holds a versatile range of products for the discerning traveler, running the gamut from ready-to-wear designer clothing and footwear to top-notch leather bags, refined fragrances, and the finest reading and writing items. Not to forget the superb accessories for discriminating equestrians since Hermès’ foundations are firmly rooted in the world of horseback riding.

Every single item by Hermès is defined by unparalleled quality, highest craftsmanship, a unique artistic approach, and the je ne sais quoi that distinguishes the French brand.

Yet for folks who like to travel and have a soft spot for ingenious timepieces, the most sophisticated Hermès product to take an exciting journey with is, in my opinion, the Slim d’Hermès GMT introduced in 2018.

Part of the Slim d’Hermès line that debuted in 2015, the technical prowess of the timepiece is expressed in its name: slim and GMT. In terms of design and aesthetics, it represents one of the most creative solutions – and one of the best legible displays, which is a crucial aspect of the genre. The Slim d’Hermès is distinguished by a highly distinctive appearance that connoisseurs instantly recognize as typical Hermès.

Hermès Slim d’Hermès GMT for 2020

Slim d’Hermès GMT: elegance meets function

The Slim d’Hermès GMT, which was initially released in rare palladium with a stunning fumé gray dial and smoky sapphire crystal, is made of pink gold and boasts a blue dial in 2020.

Like its predecessor, the new Slim d’Hermès GMT features two subdials: one for the date at 6 o’clock and one for the home time shown using the brand’s own “escaped numerals” at 9 o’clock. Opposite that, there is also a night-and-day indication for local and home times (L and H).

This tasteful arrangement is stunningly staged on a spacious, wide, two-part dial with a snailed center and a sunburst chapter ring. The two different finishing types highlight the luminescence of the gorgeous dark blue color and the signature numerals designed by Philippe Apeloig.

Slim, slender, and slightly spaced out, this font is the hallmark of the line, contributing to the watch’s decidedly contemporary aura. The subdials also feature a subtle finish, a fine graining that helps distinguish each indication from the another.

In this tasteful composition, the whimsical GMT indication decidedly takes center stage with its playful approach to the display. The shifted numerals seem “jumbled,” yet on closer inspection the observer discovers they are perfectly in order and display home time with a lacquered blue baton-shaped hand.

The new version boasts the distinctive Slim d’Hermès case, which measures just 9.48 mm in height. The movement within is the Hermès H1950, which is just 2.6 mm high thanks to a micro rotor.

For the GMT complication, the brand once again teamed up with Agenhor, the specialist complication maker that also created 2011’s superb Le Temps Suspendu, a classic of modern high horology.

As is the case with all Slim d’Hermès timepieces, the movement is beautifully decorated with perlage on the base plate, polished screw heads, and hand-chamfered bridges. It comes to life through the sapphire crystal case back, which is tinted blue.

The Slim d’Hermès GMT is topped off by a matte abyss-blue alligator skin strap with blue stitching.

And good news: contrary to the original watch, this new release is not limited. While its whimsical time zone display might not be everyone’s cup of tea, those who like the unusual will absolutely love it.
