The Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève’s Aiguille d’Or category is a prize rewarding the best overall watch among all categories. It is the most prestigious award in the entire competition. Here, the Quill & Pad panel discusses which watches it thinks has a good chance of winning this prize in the 2017 competition.
There is always something special about kicking off a new series of articles. It is like unwrapping a new notebook, sitting down with your favorite pen in hand, and beginning a new adventure. This particular adventure will take us to a very special part of the watch world: the so-called dandy watch, a word we will define right here.
Welcome to the 2017 edition of Quill & Pad’s Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève. Here the team picks favorites in the Ladies High-Mech category and explains the reasons for its choices, notably why the team has unanimously picked a winner!
SIHH 2017 truly bestowed watch lovers with a long list of most impressive watches. After digesting a multitude of wristshots and cappuccinos, I now present five fabulous watches just for the female wrist.
Many of the great marques in the history of watchmaking were driven by prominent figures who ended up with a watch named after them. Such was the case for both Louis Cartier and Pierre Arpels. Both were born into jewelry and watch dynasties and both made prominent marks on the histories of their respective houses. How else are they intertwined?

I am always excited when I see a new example of whimsy in the world. And Van Cleef & Arpels is always a good source of whimsy; the brand’s latest Poetic Complications creation, the Lady Arpels Ronde des Papillons, exemplifies this. It takes a very serious and complicated new movement and uses it for a fanciful display of beauty and cheer that includes exquisitely hand-painted butterflies and a swallow as hour and minute indicators.
It’s already been six consecutive years that I’ve had the delightful experience of going through SIHH week with several of my closest friends. Our closing discussions centered around four questions, which were focused more tightly on SIHH itself this year due to the inclusion of nine independent watchmakers: what watch did you think was best of show at SIHH? What was the worst watch of the show? What watch displayed at the show would you buy if money were no object? What watch did you see on display that would you buy with your own money?
