It’s not just the Đông Sơn drum theme of these two quite different collector’s items by watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin and pen maker Grayson Tighe that caught Elizabeth’s eye: it was the actual pieces themselves, which were inspired by the indigenous people of the Red River Delta of Vietnam.
In 1985 I walked into Hackney Technical College; the course on horology had already started two weeks earlier, but I was welcomed on board. And so began my education in horology. But how did I come to found The Naked Watchmaker?
My thoughts have turned to one major system that is always there, but generally hidden from sight: the movement. Here are a few of my favorites and why. And in the philosophy of putting my money where my mouth is, these movements have appeared in one or more watches that I’ve owned personally.
Peter Speake-Marin is leaving the brand he founded 17 years and in September plans to launch a new chapter in his career as The Naked Watchmaker. The name is a deliberate misnomer as it will not be the watchmaker that gets naked, but rather the watches. Here we not only explain what the website is about, we share an early first making-of glimpse at what it looks like.
I counted no less than nine new striking timepieces at the 2017 SIHH. This has to be some sort of record! And of these, two brands – Vacheron Constantin and Ulysse Nardin – presented two new chiming watches each.
