A Skyline Worth Waiting For – the Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon
By Nina Scally
The Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon tells the story of the balance between beauty and function. Carrying the “Auto” name, it echoes the spirit of the Sport Auto and its deep connection to the motor racing world, but with its practical date and clean lines, guarantees a seamless blend of dynamic performance and classic elegance.
It hasn’t taken Geneva Watch Days long to go from a mediocre post-trade fair experiment to a fully-fledged fixture on the horological calendar. What began as a small gathering of watch journalists, collectors and brands, bouncing between hotel suites and meeting rooms, is now an international event. There are now over 60 participating brands, not to mention those dotted around the rest of the city, showcasing the tradition of watchmaking in their own way. This year, we saw several more names join the list, as well as some indie brands worth taking a look at.
Independents are giving us a lot to think about right now. The year 2025 has been full of small names taking big risks. Free from corporate committees and the restrictions they pose, indies are experimenting with bold designs and unconventional complications. They’re offering rare and surprising designs served with a generous dose of personality. Crucially, today’s collectors are increasingly drawn to timepieces with a story. This gradual move towards watches with an emotional pull could suggest that indies could be the ones delivering mechanical substance and narrative value in 2026. Laurent Ferrier, for example, has been a privately-owned Swiss family-run company since its founding over 15 years ago, and has experienced considerable success with its Classic Auto range, which combines the brand’s distinctively smooth pebble-inspired lines with superior mechanics.
Last year, we saw the brand release a sand-coloured Classic Auto model featuring the “Galet” case with a more robust engine secured at its heart. Following along that path, Laurent Ferrier now releases a new light blue shade – the Classic Auto Horizon. Unlike the Classic Auto Sandstone model, the new blue iteration is not a limited edition. It will join the company’s permanent collection but still echoes the design language of the Classic case, complete with pebble-shaped contours and a very manageable 40mm diameter.
How the Classic Auto Horizon Wears?

Sitting at a height of 11.94mm, the Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto, crafted from stainless steel, has taken influence from the pocket watches seen throughout the 19th century era – the ball-shaped crown, polished to perfection completing its recognisable look. What many collectors seem to appreciate about this new addition is its ability to balance formal with casual. Neither a dress watch, nor a leisure watch, its 47mm lug-to-lug length ensures a great fit, no matter whether you’re wearing it to work or pairing it with dinner attire. Experts at Laurent Ferrier also fit the watch with a domed sapphire crystal glass and equip the watch with 30 meters of water resistance for daily use.
Galvanic Lacquered Dial
The true magic behind the design of this new Classic Auto Horizon watch, however is its beautiful light blue galvanic lacquered dial, which entices the light to come and play upon its surface with a vertically satin-brushed centre and a circular satin-brushed railway track. Far from just your typical blue dial, Laurent Ferrier has gone to vast measures to ensure its composition of silvery undertones and brightness is just enough to reveal an almost iridescent lustre under some lights.

A snailed small seconds complication at 6 o’clock donates more space to the main timekeeping hands, which are Agessai in profile and crafted from white gold to match the stretched droplet-shaped hour markers around the hour track. The celestial blue colour of the dial, inspired by the sky, is created using a fine layer of blue translucent lacquer that has been applied to a base with a galvanised silver technique. One of the most distinctive features is the date window, which LF positions at the 3 o’clock location on a gently sloping ramp.
Micro Rotor Movement
Underneath the entrancing blue tones of the dial is the Calibre LF270.01 – the more robust version of Laurent Ferrier’s micro rotor technology. After decades as a master watchmaker and creative director at Patek Philippe, Ferrier used these acquired skills and know-how, and launched his most impressive innovation as part of LF in 2011 with the Galet Micro-Rotor. It used a small fan-shaped micro rotor placed between the mainplate and its bridge as opposed to a traditional full-sized oscillating weight. The low-profile and more compact micro-rotor affords more view of the exquisitely finished movement through the sapphire exhibition caseback.

To counteract the inherently lower inertia of a micro rotor, it is paired with a double impulse mechanism – an escapement inspired by Breguet’s original 18th-century design. Soon, the micro rotor became a core pillar of Laurent Ferrier’s identity, and the company began building upon it with versions like the Galet Traveller, complete with GMT and the Square Micro Rotor. Today, the manufacturer is celebrated for blending traditional Haute Horlogerie with modern technical innovation in ways that only an independent watchmaker could do.
The micro rotor of this movement, crafted from platinum, improves stability and winding power, and once fully wound produces a power reserve of 72 hours. The rotor has been hand-engraved with the motif of a bird’s feather, linking to the movement’s beak-shaped automatic bridge. The entire movement can, of course, be admired through the exhibition sapphire caseback, complete with traditional finishes.
Laurent Ferrier completes the Classic Auto Horizon with a hand-stitched strap crafted from goat leather alongside a polished stainless steel pin buckle engraved with the brand’s signature.

The Pinnacle of Purity
The Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon watch underscores the modern independent watchmaking and refined aesthetics that LF is capable of. The Calibre LF270.01, complete with 950 platinum micro rotor, ensurea efficient winding and a slim profile for better performance and a less restricted view of the brand’s horological heritage, all wrapped up inside 40mm stainless steel proportions.

Visually, however, it is the dial of the Classic Auto Horizon that is the real novelty here. A study in restraint, it appears calm, tranquil and beautifully balanced thanks to being laced with thoughtful details like the recognisable sloped date and sailed small seconds sub-counter. Delicately finished, the dial politely invites the wearer to linger on its details for a moment – an attribute that enables the wearer to slow down and enjoy the passage of time through a canvas that is neither overtly vibrant nor too muted.
