The first spinoff film from The Fast and the Furious franchise, ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw,’ was released on August 2, 2019. It features two great characters from the previous films: Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Deckard Shaw, played by Jason Statham. Both Johnson and Statham are known to be watch lovers and frequently wear their own timepieces in movies. Here Nick Gould identifies what’s on their wrists in the film.
About Nick Gould
Nick Gould is an Australian watch nut who loves nothing better than to spot watches on the wrists of celebrities.
In 1952, after a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants, the teenage king of Iraq, Faisal II, met the Dodgers’ second baseman, Jackie Robinson. In a photo taken of the young royal while chatting with the baseball legend, Nick Gould noticed a watch peeking out from underneath his sleeve. In plain sight was a hint of the dial, the case including crown, and one of the two chronograph pushers. It was a previously undiscovered Patek Philippe Reference 1518!
Like a proper gentleman, Hollywood legend Clark Gable paired wristwatches to go with his outfits both on and off screen. Gable had a gold Rolex Oyster Perpetual Reference 6011 and also wore a Patek Philippe Reference 1526 Perpetual Calendar, prominently seen in ‘Soldier of Fortune’ as Nick Gould highlights here.
As the resident Quill & Pad wristwatch spotter, Nick Gould spends many hours on random searches looking for interesting horological finds. Generally he ends up finding nothing, but occasionally he finds nuggets of gold. And 2019 was quite a fruitful year for him in terms of unearthing some interesting Wrist Watching stories, which he shares here.
Nick Gould spotted American actor Mark Wahlberg wearing an early-delivery Rolex GMT-Master II ‘Root Beer,’ once again putting his penchant for precious metal watches on display.
In 1954, famed photographer Yousuf Karsh took a portrait of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso in which he is wearing a late 1940s Jaeger-LeCoultre Reference 141.008.1 triple calendar with moon phase and gorgeous teardrop lugs. Where is that watch today? Expert spotter Nick Gould may just have unearthed its whereabouts.
Walter Cronkite and Peter Jennings were two of the best known and most respected broadcast journalists on American television. While Cronkite was known to wear a gold Rolex Datejust and Omega chronographs, resident watch spotter Nick Gould surprisingly found evidence of Jennings sporting a Heuer Monaco.
In the 1968 film ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ Steve McQueen played the title character, a millionaire businessman and avid sportsman involved in a cat-and-mouse game with an insurance claims investigator played by Faye Dunaway. McQueen chose two of his personal watches to wear in the film: an elegant Cartier Tank Cintrée and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox. But when Nick Gould looked further into this, he discovered that contrary to popular opinion McQueen also surprisingly owned a Tank.

On the set of ‘Apocalypse Now’ Marlon Brando said, “If they’re looking at my watch, then I’m not doing my job as an actor.” The filmmakers let him wear the Rolex GMT-Master he was set on wearing, but he removed the bezel, resulting in the unique-looking timepiece closely associated with the Colonel Kurtz character. And now that watch is up for auction at Phillips.
