When MB&F launched its Legacy Machine collection in 2011 with LM1, it was with no small amount of trepidation. The young brand had quickly developed an excellent reputation and passionate following by creating avant-garde Horological Machines, and it certainly wasn’t a given that round watches featuring a reinterpretation of traditional complications/indications would be as well accepted.
Maximilian Büsser was well aware that with the round Legacy Machines, there was a very real risk MB&F might be seen as having lost its way. But then MB&F itself was a series of mighty gambles; gambles that, against all odds, had paid off . . . and with its majestic balance wheel suspended high above the twin dials, Legacy Machine No. 1 turned out to be another winner – even taking home two coveted awards at the 2012 edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève.
What was less clear, though, was how the Legacy Machine collection would develop. Would the next model feature a round case? What complication might be reinterpreted next?
As it turned out, with its dual suspended balances and planetary differential, Legacy Machine No.2 was very well received and clarified the direction that the collection is likely to follow in the future – “likely” because surprise is SOP (standard operating procedure) with MB&F.
We hope you enjoy these photos of LM2 and hope that they convey a feel for what makes it so special
