While at times our online magazine seems to have already been active for years (in a good way), Quill & Pad only launched just over two months ago. And thanks to all of you it has even more successful than we ever imagined.
And we were aiming high!
To celebrate and to reward those of you (or some of you, at least) who have supported Quill & Pad though its first baby steps, we have staged a big prize giveaway and are now very pleased to announce that the winners have been selected at random from our list of newsletter subscribers and contacted. They will be receiving their goodies shortly.
If you missed out this time, don’t despair as we are planning another prize giveaway sometime after Baselworld. So if you haven’t already subscribed to our regular newsletter (which we haven’t really begun sending out as yet), please do.
All you have to do is enter your e-mail in the field on the right side of the any page on Quill &Pad and click “Subscribe.”
The winners of this big prize draw will soon be receiving the incredible gifts described below.
A handmade fountain pen by Manu Propria valued at $2,200.
As a mechanical watch enthusiast, we know that you are also likely to be interested in other handcrafted objects. What better way to launch Quill & Pad than with one of the finest “quills” available?
This one-of-a-kind writing instrument embellished with urushi lacquer is modeled on traditional Japanese fountain pens. All parts of the pen except the ink and the nib (which comes from famed nib-maker Bock in Germany) are handmade, including the ebonite barrel (which makes it very light). The complex urushi layers are polished between each step, resulting in this unique look. It takes 14 days to complete one pen. For more information on this process and what makes it so unique, read Elizabeth’s in-depth look.
The fountain pen comes with a handmade pen rest lacquered to look like a branch and is delivered in two hand-sewn duffel pouches and will go to Anneke in Great Britain. Congratulations!

Stephen Forsey and Robert Greubel discussing the original Meccano proof-of-concept model of their double tourbillon 30° invention
Rare doesn’t get much rarer than this, unless we’re talking about a Greubel Forsey timepiece. Robert Greubel and Stephen Forsey very kindly provided Quill & Pad with one of the exceedingly exclusive Meccano proof-of-concept models of the double tourbillon 30° mechanism, which were created to commemorate the brand’s tenth anniversary this year. The original Meccano model was made by Stephen Forsey; you can learn more about the significance of this special “complication” in the video below and in Joshua’s in-depth look at its origin and significance. This dream of a watch geek prize was won by Andrew in the United States. Congratulations!
Richard Mille’s celebrity golf ambassador Bubba Watson has hand-signed a visor for one lucky winner of our draw, which we talked about in our Saturday Heartbeat. We hope that Bryan in the United States plays golf, because he has ended up with this priceless treasure.
Richard Mille also kindly offered a pair of Sol Republic Tracks headphones, which will now head out to India to enrich Gautam’s music experiences.
Roland Iten had a special surprise up his sleeve for three winners: a beautiful, signed, limited edition of three print illustrations of the yet-to-be-released R8 22 MkIII buckle, which is expected to launch in June 2014.
Nomos Glashütte sponsored a package consisting of one “pencil case” (including a fountain pen, mechanical pencils, an eraser and stationery), one copy of the The Great Universal Encyclopaedia, and one notebook. Sorry, Felix, you didn’t win this time. But Albert in Brazil was very happy to learn he did!
For fans of high watchmaking who love to read, what could be better than receiving a signed copy of a treasured book? And we here at Quill & Pad have several to offer you:
Quill & Pad co-founder Ian Skellern and watchmaker Peter Speake-Marin co-wrote Hands of Time, the story of the A.H.C.I, which was published for the independent group’s 25th anniversary. Three copies signed by Skellern and Speake-Marin will soon be on their way to Brazil, Jamaica and Switzerland!
Michael Clerizo signed a copy of his latest tome, George Daniels: A Master Watchmaker & His Art, for one lucky winner. And that winner is in the United States!
Quill & Pad co-founder Elizabeth Doerr has donated a signed copy of her book on independent watchmaking, 12 Faces of Time: Horological Virtuosos. And this copy will be going to Pakistan soon.
Alex Ghotbi gives away a signed copy of his book, Vacheron Constantin Caliber 1731, which will soon be heading to Canada.
Independent watchmaker Beat Haldimann signed and will send two copies of his exclusively designed and photographed book Haldimann to two lucky winners, one in Singapore and one in the United States.
A signed copy of photographer Ralf Baumgarten’s unique book UhrMenschen, a look at 50 very different people and their watches, will soon be heading to Great Britain.
