The first spinoff film from The Fast and the Furious franchise, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw, is set for worldwide release on August 2, 2019. It features two great characters from the previous films: Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham.
Both Johnson and Statham are known to be watch lovers and frequently wear their own timepieces in movies.
I have been monitoring the emerging photographs and trailers for any noticeable watches and saw Johnson wearing a Panerai Luminor Submersible. The 44 mm stainless steel watch looks relatively small on his wrist, as Johnson is one tall gentleman (and also quite ripped). Johnson has previously worn Panerai models in films such as 2015’s San Andreas and 2016’s Fast & Furious 6.
Statham likes Panerai watches and wore a PAM 384 ceramic Radiomir in The Fate of The Furious, which I first spotted back in 2017.
Statham’s watch in Hobbs and Shaw proved a little harder to identify, but the initial clues were promising: all the familiar signs of a Rolex or a Tudor stuck out on the stainless steel Oyster bracelet, while the case displayed a characteristic knurled bezel.
The final trailer, released a few weeks ago, finally provided the money shot showing the timepiece on Statham’s wrist: a vintage Rolex Submariner.
The instantly familiar graduated diving bezel is eminently visible along with the case and bracelet. I also got a very clear view of the dial, which shows its characteristic triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock, the pad-printed coronet, and the word Rolex below it.
I was unsure whether it was a Rolex Reference 5512 with C.O.S.C. certification as an officially certified chronometer or a non-C.O.S.C.-certified Reference 5513 until I saw an interview Statham did with ET Canada in which he was wearing the same watch he sports in the upcoming film. I have now been able to identify it as a Reference 5513 Submariner.
Keep an eye out for Statham’s Submariner in the movie when Shaw visits his mother in prison and in another scene in which he picks up his sister and Hobbs.
