Dr. William Julien is a knowledgeable and experienced watch collector, who recently sent us a link to a video that he and his son, William Alexander Julien, made about the journey of his commissioning of a bespoke Grönefeld 1941 Remontoire.
The nine-minute video is very moving and beautifully filmed and edited. If you are interested in watches and beautiful design (as you are likely to be if you’ve read this far) I highly recommend that you pour yourself a glass of your favorite tipple and hit play: it will not disappoint.

Damnit, as if I didn’t have enough watches to lust after. The orange subdial was an inspired choice.
To be fully honest with you I wish one day my son could realize a similar video… as you wrote beautifully made, touching and inspiring
I appreciate a lot the link father and son, but imho there’s a big missing point… where’s the lovely Wife (with capital W) who gifted this marvel to her husband??? As well as many other things deeply linked to his passion (eg watchmaker bench, …)???
Maybe she didn’t want to be shown in the video…?
I can agree, but if my wife should make me a gift like this, for sure I will pay definitely a higher homage to her even without including her in the video… ❤️❤️❤️, anyway a great short movie, really enjoyed watching it!!! Thanks for sharing!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Elizabeth,
Thank you for posting my son’s video.
I would like to add “Make a Movie” to GaryG’s list of suggestions that watch collectors can do during this Covid pandemic (https://quillandpad.com/2020/04/11/why-watchmaking-matters-now/).
As a background, my son William (18 and a Duke freshman) has been home for the past 8 weeks, like most kids around the world. This movie was his final project for his cinematography class; our Covid-19 project, if you will.
My wife is actually the bartender in the movie. Because all hotels/restaurants in south Florida are closed, our home bar is masquerading as the hotel bar. The Smokey Old Fashioned was the real deal and quite tasty, I might add.
Luca brings up some good points about my wife. All things beautiful in my life are because of her. I would probably still have medical school textbooks in the boxes in the living room if not for her. We will be giving her some “higher homage” tomorrow (Mother’s Day) with breakfast in bed, a big bouquet of flowers, and a wonderful home-cooked meal with her family (including her mother) in attendance (social distancing under the backyard trellis, of course). There may even be a gift with a few diamonds that readers here would find interesting.
Your son has a real talent. Let us know what the gift was when the coast is clear!
Thanks for the further information, Bill. And I’m so glad to hear that your wife is getting her due homage and made an appearance in the video. It was so skillfully done that it was hard to tell it was your home bar. What a great family project, very inspiring!
Thank you for making and posting this video, it is an inspiration and truly superb.
As an independent watch and clockmaker maker I can only hope your video will inspire other collectors to to do something similar. with horological pieces they have commissioned.
