Our friends at The Watches TV visited Jacob & Co to get an inside look at the crazy Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon, the second timepiece created in celebration of the watch and jewelry brand’s partnership with the iconic car maker.
While the first watch brought forth in honor of the partnership was an existing Jacob model given a few Bugatti-inspired details – the partnership was still so fresh that there was very little time to do anything else – the Chiron is all new. And we guarantee you won’t have seen anything like it before!
The Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon almost serves the timekeeping as a side dish: the most eye-catching part of this watch is the sapphire crystal engine block with 16 working “pistons” and a “crankshaft.” It is absolutely mesmerizing to see these little pistons do the same work that their life-size cousins do. Of course, there is no gas involved here: the animation is powered by a spring and activated on demand by a pusher at the bottom of the case.
Jacob & Co paid a lot of attention to detail, the whole movement is suspended on “shocks,” which challenged the movement designers to ensure that the crown stems could handle the motion in dimensions that they are normally not designed for.
The power reserve indicator at 3 o’clock resembles a gas tank display, and Jacob & Co even made “exhaust pipes” extending out from the “engine block,” which flank a flying tourbillon placed at a 30-degree angle at the top of the watch. The tourbillon can be admired through a sapphire crystal window modeled after the famed Bugatti grill.
While certainly impressive, the tourbillon is more a sideshow as the engine block is so mesmerizing and very obviously the focus. The whole watch is quite an eye-catcher, just like its automotive counterpart.
Jacob & Co needs quite a large case to showcase this miniature marvel, which is more a lightweight titanium frame set with sapphire crystal windows.
The mechanical mini engine serves no practical purpose at all, it’s all to generate massive amounts of fun factor, a function it excels at!
