Writing about watches goes beyond the mere vocation of being a journalist. Many watch journalists may or may not have loved watches when they first started writing about them. But attitudes and personal tastes transform over time so that some journalists who started in another field may have come to love watches more than they ever thought possible.
And four of them feature in this Instagram Live video, people who earn their daily bread putting thoughts and opinions out for all to see. People whose professions have allowed the collector and enthusiast fraternities to frame their thoughts, likes, and dislikes.
The overriding question in this video is what makes individuals like us decide on what we do, say, buy, collect, and, above all, write?
Meet Karishma Karer and Sarosh Mody of The Hour Markers, the two journalists who initiated this meeting of the minds. They are joined by Neha Bajpai, editor-at-large for Revolution Asia, and myself. Together we briefly discuss how we got into watches and some fun experiences brought about by our jobs – including our first encounters with the almighty Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. In addition to talking about some of our experiences with the digital edition of Watches and Wonders 2021, we also took on challenging audience questions including how we deal with negative reviews and how we handled reviews published during the COVID-19 era – an era in which we sadly did not handle too many new watches live.
One burning question the audience threw in was whether we return watches borrowed for reviews, much to the common amusement of all four participants. You might be surprised at the answers.
Please enjoy this highly candid discussion.
