Collaborations between leather goods and watch companies are nothing new. Hermès joined forces with Apple (who, given the enormous amount of watches it sells, can well be categorized as a watch manufacturer), and Berluti partnered with Hublot.
The latter is similar to another partnership that was recently announced between Tutima and Esquivel. While Tutima doesn’t need an introduction to Quill & Pad readers, Esquivel just might. This company was founded in 1994 when Southern California-based designer George Esquivel started designing his own shoes.
These were very well received, and ever since George Esquivel has been honing his skills in both design and craftsmanship. For him, this is at the center of his brand’s “DNA.”
In 2020 the shoemaker opened the Esquivel House in downtown Los Angeles, a combination of store and workshop, where he both focuses on his own craft and highlights artistry from around the world. Unique about Esquivel is that his personal success goes beyond his own brand: he also served as creative director of Tumi and was a consultant to renowned Italian brand Fratelli Rossetti.

For the collaboration with Tutima, Esquivel opted to use a restrained patina for the leathers in dove grey and chestnut brown; these are embellished with a hand-etched compass rose. These elements combine to provide a vintage feel that goes very nicely with the Patria Dual Time and its spirit of exploring the world.

Both evoke old-school feelings that are difficult to find these days. For the Tutima, we can see some nostalgia in the contrast of colors. In its 43 mm case, the Patria Dial Time is contemporary in size, but the pink gold hands and classic layout of the dial give it a timeless sense of style. This continues at the back, where Caliber 619 displays its typical Glashütte three-quarter plate, including three jewels set in screw-mounted gold chatons.

One of these three jewels is located at the center of the movement and forms also the middle of a compass rose etched on the underside of the sapphire crystal, a nice nod to the leather goods Esquivel created to accompany this watch.

Esquivel’s “travel extension kit”
Esquivel created a travel extension kit to go with the Tutima Patria Dual Time, which includes two straps, a watch pouch, an overnight duffle bag, and even a pair of the leather brand’s renowned Chelsea boots. This extensive gear accompanies you just as easily on a weekend in the country as it does while exploring a new city in the trunk of your E-type or in the overhead compartment of a city hopper.

The beauty of the hand-applied patina is that its color receives a deep, warm tone over time. This almost gives the impression that it is alive. As Esquivel has only further embellished the leather items with the depiction of the compass rose, there is no other distraction from the beauty of the leather, something that is slightly different from Berluti’s script collection.

Tutima and Esquivel will produce a limited edition of 25 pieces of the Patria Dual Time accompanied by the leather goods that include two beautiful straps, a watch pouch, an overnight bag, and pair of Chelsea boots. They will be available through Esquivel’s atelier in downtown Los Angeles, Gary’s in Newport Beach, and the Tutima USA and Esquivel shoes websites.
