Chasing the Naples Night: The DOXA SUB 200T Afterglow x Exquisite Timepieces

By Nina Scally

There’s a stunning moment that unfolds each day in Naples, Florida, right after the sun drops below the horizon. Once the fiery sunset fades and the water calms down, the entire sky lights up in this soft, radiant pink hue. Locals tend to call it the “afterglow”, and it happens almost every single evening over the water. It’s the exact moment everyone on the coast stops what they’re doing just to watch. Capturing this exact, transient wash of colour, however, is difficult. Exquisite Timepieces has chosen to immortalize it in a recent collaborative endeavor with legendary Swiss dive watch manufacturer DOXA. The result is the DOXA SUB 200T Afterglow. Only 50 of these watches exist worldwide, and each one is individually numbered. The design is a tribute to that specific Florida sunset, capturing that rich pink color inside the classic SUB 200T case.

The Orange Revolution and DOXA’s relationship with Colour

DOXA’s pioneering relationship with dial colours is quite extraordinary. Born in Le Locle, the traditional cradle of Swiss watchmaking, the brand has consistently woven mechanical innovation with pragmatic design ever since its founding in 1889. However, the brand further cemented its legacy in 1967 by introducing the very first purpose-built dive watch designed specifically for the general public: the legendary SUB 300.

At the time, the luxury dive watch market was dominated by austere, military-issued instruments featuring stark black dials. They lacked colour and excitement. DOXA’s product manager, Urs Eschle, recognised this flaw and partnered with professional divers to create a fleet of prototype dials. One of those divers was the legendary Jacques-Yves Cousteau. The watchmaker quickly discovered that red and yellow hues disappeared at depth, turning a muddy grey, while black dials offered poor contrast against the necessary luminous plots. The undeniable victor of these trials was a blazing, vivid orange, which Cousteau and his team tested and endorsed, helping the company distribute the iconic dive watch through U.S Divers – a premier American commercial diving equipment company.

Known as the “Professional,” this orange dial was built for contrast. The bright orange face pops against the massive black minute hand, making it incredibly easy to read your dive time instantly, even in pitch-black water. After that, it became a cult classic among the world’s best divers and later hit pop-culture stardom as the signature watch worn by Dirk Pitt, the fictional marine engineer in Clive Cussler’s famous adventure novels.

Once the Professional really took off, DOXA decided to have some fun and build out an entire aquatic rainbow. It rolled out the Sharkhunter for anyone sticking to a classic black dial, the metallic silver-sunburst Searambler, and the Divingstar in a seriously bright yellow. It also added the Caribbean in a deep, oceanic navy blue. Fast forward to today, and the brand has kept the momentum going with fresh shades like the turquoise Aquamarine and the crisp Whitepearl.

DOXA became the king of aquatic colourways, yet every one of these historic hues was born out of pure utility. They were bright, aggressive colours intended to punch through the gloom of a shipwreck, or mirror the ocean itself. That same legacy makes the new SUB 200T Afterglow so fascinating for the modern collector, whether new to DOXA or not. This new shade is more delicate – an atmospheric pink that takes a pivot away from ocean colours.

A Dial Bathed in the Afterglow

A single glance at the dial of the DOXA SUB 200T Afterglow instantly immerses you in the warmth of a setting sun. The pink execution is highly sophisticated, steering clear of the flat, primary pastel tones you sometimes see in fashion watches or garish dive watches. It’s still clear that this is a serious piece of diving equipment. DOXA experts have applied a refined sunray finish to the surface of the dial that interacts dynamically with changing light environments. Beneath the harsh midday sun, it presents as crisp and energetic. Still, as the ambient light softens into evening, the dial deepens, adopting the exact bruised-peach and dusky-pink characteristics of Naples’ night sky.

What really stands out is that luminous sunburst dial. It pops in low light and makes reading the watch underwater a breeze. You still get that classic DOXA handset sweeping across the dial, complete with the famously oversized minute hand. Just like the 1967 originals, it’s purposely designed so that tracking your dive time is always much easier than checking the actual hour. The application of the luminous material is generous and uniformly applied, too. Critical timing elements still leap off the pink canvas with complete clarity. Suffice to say, nothing has been compromised on this new iteration of the SUB 200T. The overall composition feels fresh and contemporary, while still honouring the rigid functional requirements that have dictated DOXA’s design language for over half a century.

Sculpted for the Swell

A luxury dive watch can easily become bogged down with extraneous helium escape valves and gargantuan dimensions better suited for a deep-sea bathyscaphe than a human forearm, but this is perhaps where the sheer brilliance of the newly introduced SUB 200T architecture lies. Forged from marine-grade 316L stainless steel, the brushed case of the Afterglow measures a highly democratic 39mm in diameter and a lug-to-lug measurement of 41.5mm. This restrained footprint ensures that the distinctive, barrel-like cushion case sits perfectly centred on the wrist, making it perfect for wading into the deep. Furthermore, the case thickness has been beautifully reined in to just 10.7mm, sitting flat on the wrist and sliding effortlessly beneath the tight cuff of a neoprene wetsuit or the sleeve of a tailored linen shirt with equal aplomb.

Encompassing the flat, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal is DOXA’s patented unidirectional rotating bezel, which features the brand’s signature deep sawtooth edges for maximum tactile grip and the iconic ‘no deco’ dual-scale engraving. This ingenious feature lets you calculate both elapsed dive time and no-stop decompression limits simultaneously, in accordance with US Navy diving tables. It’s yet another reminder of the brand’s commitment to safety and survival out on the water. Naturally, a heavily knurled screw-down crown and a robust, closed caseback (engraved with original artwork and limited-edition numbering) ensure it upholds a highly capable water resistance rating of 200 meters.

The Mechanics

Under the hood of this new DOXA SUB 200T “Afterglow” x Exquisite Timepieces edition is the Sellita SW 200 elaboré. It’s a Swiss automatic movement that gets a lot of well-deserved love for just being incredibly tough and reliable. Beating at a brisk 28,800 vph, it ensures that the seconds hand glides with a perfectly smooth sweep across that gorgeous pink sunray dial.

You get a solid 38 hours of power reserve here, which is more than enough to keep it ticking if you leave it on the nightstand overnight. What’s really impressive is DOXA’s choice to go with an elaboré-grade movement. Because it’s adjusted in three positions instead of the usual two, you’re getting much tighter, more reliable accuracy. It’s a great nod to the brand’s 130-year-old mission: building seriously high-quality watches that don’t break the bank.

Wearability and Availability

Anyone who has experienced a timepiece from this Swiss dive watch manufacturer knows that the tactile experience of wearing a DOXA is inextricably linked to its bracelet, and the Afterglow is no exception.  The brand’s legendary ‘Beads-of-Rice’ stainless steel bracelet secures the watch firmly to the wrist, infused with tons of retro character and charm. Measuring a vintage-appropriate 18mm at the lugs, this intricate, multi-link design offers supreme flexibility, with individual, rounded links that articulate fluidly. A sturdy folding clasp with a practical wetsuit extension completes the bracelet, letting it expand quickly before a plunge into the Gulf. Yet this rugged, brushed steel armour against the soft warmth of the pink Afterglow dial is what makes this collaboration so successful. It’s a watch of beautiful contradictions: a serious, historic diving instrument rendered in the fleeting colours of a Florida evening.

Much like the atmospheric phenomenon it honours, the DOXA SUB 200T Afterglow will disappear quickly. Production is strictly capped at an exclusive 50 individually numbered pieces worldwide, cementing its immediate status as a rarity anomaly within the broader DOXA catalogue. Exquisite Timepieces has drawn on its unyielding passion for horology to conceive this concept with DOXA, crafting a timepiece that speaks directly to the seasoned collector’s desire for narrative and exclusivity.

Bringing a bit of Swiss watchmaking from Le Locle straight to the sunny shores of Naples, the DOXA SUB 200T “Afterglow” officially drops on October 16, 2026, at 10 AM Eastern, right as the Windup Watch Fair kicks off. You can grab one exclusively through the Exquisite Timepieces website or in person at the company’s booth. Priced at a highly competitive $1,990 USD, it packs plenty of heritage and value into one piece. It’s a beautifully executed tribute to the Naples coastline, offering collectors the rare chance to wear the warmth of a Florida sunset long after the day fades.
