Wrist Watching: Ryan Gosling Wears Omega Speedmaster In Upcoming ‘First Man’ Movie

by Nick Gould

Canadian actor Ryan Gosling is probably best known to most for his role as Sebastian Wilder in the award-winning La La Land.

The Oscar-nominated actor now portrays the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong, in the upcoming film First Man, which is due to open the 2018 Venice Film Festival at the end of August. This drama sees Gosling once again teamed up with La La Land director Damien Chazelle.

Incidentally, Chazelle also seems to love watches as much as we already know Gosling does: he was spotted by Elizabeth Doerr wearing a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Ultra Thin Small Second while accepting his 2017 Oscar for the Los Angeles-set fairytale (see ‘La La Land’ Wins 6 Oscars, Director Damien Chazelle Accepts His Award Wearing Jaeger-LeCoultre).

The Omega Speedmaster was the timepiece to pass all of NASA’s tests and become qualified for spaceflights and Extravehicular activity (EVA) in 1965. It was also the first watch on the moon after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin successfully landed on the lunar surface during the Apollo 11 mission.

Interestingly, Armstrong left his Speedmaster in the Lunar Module as a backup as its electronic timer had malfunctioned. It was Aldrin’s Speedmaster that had the honors of being the first watch on the moon.

As you can see from the photos taken on set, Gosling at times sports the Speedmaster on a mesh bracelet. The familiar black bezel and tri-compax chronograph layout are very visible.

In the trailer it is peeking out from under his sleeve. It additionally appears he is wearing an as-yet unidentified Omega dress watch at various times too.

We also see a Speedmaster strapped to the spacesuit of an astronaut during another scene in the trailer.

In other news, the ocean is damp!

Love this site, but Neil Armstrong wearing a speedmaster isn’t really news.

Will it be a real watch this time, or another fake?
