Motor Meets Rotor: Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition Revs It Up In Honor Of The New 911 Carrera 4S (992)

by Sabine Zwettler

Porsche Design has released a anumber of interesting chronographs in recent years, starting with the surprising Monobloc Actuator, which employs racecar technology for the case and chronograph operation.

The German brand’s first proprietary chronograph caliber followed, christened Werk 01.200 and featuring a flyback function and an official C.O.S.C. precision certificate (see Porsche Design Introduces First In-House Chronograph Movement, But This Timepiece Is Exclusively Available For Owners Of Porsche’s New 911 Turbo S Sports Car).

All Porsche Design timepieces of recent years can be distinguished by their decidedly minimalist design, inspired from the world of motor racing and, not surprisingly, the iconic Porsche 911.

For many, the Porsche 911 is the pinnacle of sportscars, a perfect blend of sophisticated design, superior functionality, and sensational performance. Introduced in 1963 and now in its eighth generation, the 911 is almost synonymous with the German car manufacturer and reflects the company’s philosophy of continually coming up with a next-generation performance car that is faster, more efficient, and more resilient. The 911 is the epitome of the art of automobile engineering.

Not surprisingly Porsche Design banks on this rich heritage of the mother brand, and in my opinion rightfully so and with great success.

The marketing claiming a connection between cars and timekeeping, obviously a favorite among watch brands these days, makes total sense in the context of this luxury car manufacturer – and the Porsche Design timepieces exude its spirit in every detail.

On the occasion of the eagerly awaited unveiling of the latest generation of the beloved 911, Porsche Design releases a limited edition wristwatch by the name of Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition.

And there is one thing to know straight from the start: it is not equipped with the brand’s own Werk 01.200 caliber, but rather with a true classic from the watch world, the Valjoux 7750.

While some purists might be disappointed by this choice, it pays off in terms of retail pricing: the titanium-encased timepiece comes equipped with a nice price tag of €4,911 euros.

Dial of the Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition

Porsche Design does a very nice job with dial design in general.

According to the Porsche Design founder and designer of the 911, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, design should be focused on functionality, a watch be both reliable and highly legible.

In true dashboard style with a low-reflection and -glare display, this dial was designed as widely as possible and outfitted with contrasting white indices and hands, while the chronograph elements prominently stand out in red.

Commemorating the eagerly awaited new 911 version – model indication 911 Carrera 4S (992) – the watch’s dial features an outline of the Porsche 911 and a moving semicircular plaque in lieu of running seconds at 9 o’clock featuring the word “timeless machine” whose function is just to indicate that the movement is wound.

Case of the Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition

As it is the case with all Porsche Design watches, Porsche’s signature lightweight construction makes full use of a titanium case that is as light as it is resilient and skin-friendly.

In order to give the dial as much space as possible, the bezel is quite svelte. The bold crown allows a good grip, while the flattened pushers fit harmoniously into the design.

The leather strap is attached by the characteristic cut-out lugs of the 1919 line, which lend a certain lightness to the design. Referencing the vehicle, the strap is manufactured using the same leather and thread from the new 911’s interior.

As previously mentioned, the engine located under the hood is the tested-and-true Valjoux 7750. This caliber has tradition at Porsche Design, since it already powered the famous Chronograph I from 1972.

Here it has been upgraded with the signature Porsche Design “icon” rotor, which is eminently visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

In my opinion, the Porsche Design 911 Chronograph Timeless Machine Limited Edition offers a coherent concept and real sportscar look and feel. The limitation number of 911 (naturally) adds just a little bit more Porsche feel.
