About Elizabeth Doerr

I am the co-founder of Quill & Pad and was editor-in-chief until December 31, 2022. Specialized in horological publishing since my first Basel Fair in 1991, I have contributed to magazines, newspapers and websites too numerous to recount here.

My primary focus remains on the technical side of high watchmaking where progress meets tradition, but I often also profile the colorful personalities and historical elements that make up this surprisingly diverse and compelling world of ticks and tocks.

May 21, 2014/1 Comment/in Corum/by Elizabeth Doerr

Few of China Haidan group’s acquisitions in the luxury watch sector have made more recent headlines in the world of watches than the jewel among them, Corum. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing. China Haidian’s group communications director, Marie-Alexandrine Leibowitch, responded to my queries regarding the recent ousting of former CEO Antonio Calce and yesterday’s dismissal of head watchmaker Laurent Besse along with a few other employees.

May 21, 2014/4 Comments/in Auctions/by Elizabeth Doerr

Vintage watches are becoming more and more of a subject in our little world of ticks and tocks. So I set out for Frankfurt very early on a Saturday morning to meet up with an old acquaintance, vintage watch dealer Ron Geweniger. And we set off for the Dr. Crott auction so I could learn a bit of what goes on behind the bidding.

Chopard’s co-president is racing his 25th Mille Miglia this year. Here are a few impressions from the last couple of days and nights on the strada italiana. . . .

The Cannes Film Festival is where Grace Kelly first met Prince Rainier in 1955. So the The opening film could therefore not be a more fitting one: Grace de Monaco, a new film by French director Olivier Dahan, is set to open the 67th edition of the glittering event and Cartier figures prominently into this 30-million-dollar feature film.

Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Incredible Chiming Machines: The Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon And The Duomètre à Grande Sonnerie

May 8, 2014/1 Comment/in Jaeger-LeCoultre/by Elizabeth Doerr

In 2009, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced a wristwatch so complicated in its premise and execution that it made my jaw drop: the Duomètre à Grande Sonnerie. Then earlier this year, the Le Sentier-based brand introduced the Master Ultra Thin Minute Repeater Flying Tourbillon.

The World’s Biggest Man-Made Calendar: El Castillo At Chichén Itzá

May 6, 2014/10 Comments/in Science, History, Travel/by Elizabeth Doerr

Contemplating the 30-meter-high ancient pyramid at Mayan archeological site Chichén Itzá in the blazing Yucatán sunlight, I was awestruck by the structure’s complexity. Not just because of the pure historical ramifications of the pyramid and temple , but also because of its timekeeping capabilities. Chichén Itzá’s most famous structure was actually built to be the world’s largest calendar And this at a time when calendars didn’t even exist!

The Secret For Eternal Youth: Patek Philippe Is 175 Years Young

May 1, 2014/7 Comments/in Patek Philippe/by Elizabeth Doerr

One hundred seventy-five years is an enormous span of time for a watch company to be in continuous existence and consistently producing not just timepieces, but top-of-the-range timepieces. What is the secret of this quintessentially traditional company, which has managed to move with the times so gracefully, continuing to appeal to younger people just getting bit by the horology bug as much as older, settled collectors?
