About Joshua Munchow

I am the resident “nerdwriter” for Quill & Pad. I revel in the complicated aspects of watchmaking thanks to a lifelong love of gears and clever mechanisms. With a background in model-making, machining, and dissecting anything I could as a child, I bring a natural technical curiosity to my writing.

My day job with a design firm as technical development lead (in other words, head prototype-maker guy) gives me a thorough understanding of how things are supposed to work. Combining this with a healthy dose of geekery in numerous subjects sometimes results in interesting word explosions that are all me – like “awesomazingatude.” You may have already seen these “wordinations” on watchuseek.com, where I began my writing career thanks to founder Ernie Romers.

Grand Seiko T0 Constant Force Tourbillon: I Couldn’t Believe My Eyes – Reprise

December 11, 2022/2 Comments/in Seiko/by Joshua Munchow

As Joshua Munchow swiped through posts on Instagram one day, he was stopped in his tracks, toothbrush dangling from his gaping mouth, eyes wide, and one singular thought running through his head as he stared at his phone: Grand Seiko doesn’t make movements like this. This is an avant-garde tourbillon movement with a constant force escapement and incredible, exposed mechanics! What in the world . . .?! Meet the T0.

Hautlence Linear Series 1: A Lesson In Motion

December 4, 2022/0 Comments/in Highlights, Hautlence, Independents/by Joshua Munchow

Hautlence is a brand that has always done things a little differently. And its latest model, the Linear Series 1, is no exception: it features a normal minute display with a jumping hour indication that appears to move in a straight (linear) line. Joshua Munchow dives in for a closer look.

C By Romain Gauthier: A Continuum of Lifelong Learning

November 27, 2022/1 Comment/in Highlights, Independents, Romain Gauthier/by Joshua Munchow

First launched toward the end of 2021, the Continuum, now known as C by Romain Gauthier, is the boutique brand’s take on a luxury sports watch without falling into the trap of trying to be just another voice in the steel sports watch market.

Urwerk UR-120 ‘Spock’: It’s Great To Be A Nerd

November 20, 2022/2 Comments/in Independents, Urwerk/by Joshua Munchow

The Urwerk UR-120 is a thematic update for the UR-110 using what appears to be a very similar mechanism and dial layout. Even the case is generally the same. But while at first glance it shares much with the UR-110 in essence, when you start to compare the two this is a dramatically different watch, in particular when it gives you the Vulcan salute!

Here’s Why The Crown Is The Unsung Hero Of Watchmaking (And Why Rolex Wears The Crown) – Reprise

November 19, 2022/5 Comments/in Highlights, Thoughts & Opinion, Rolex/by Joshua Munchow

One of the most important yet underappreciated parts of a watch is the crown. The humble crown has played an extensive role in helping Rolex – and the rest of the watch industry – get to where it is today. Here’s why.

Corum Golden Bridge Table Clock: A Macro Mechanical Sculpture Right In Your Living Room

November 13, 2022/1 Comment/in Highlights, Clocks, Corum/by Joshua Munchow

The Corum Golden Bridge Table Clock isn’t just loosely inspired by the Corum Golden Bridge, it is made to be a nearly perfect replica of the watch at the scale of a table, and even doubling as a coffee table!

Bell & Ross BR-X5: A Masterclass In The “Foot-In-The-Door” Technique

November 5, 2022/1 Comment/in Bell & Ross/by Joshua Munchow

The Bell & Ross BR-X5 heralds a new design language that is still clearly Bell & Ross at its core but could be considered something dramatically different. And Joshua Munchow thinks it’s a winner!

Zenith Defy Skyline: How To Kill Two Birds With One Watch

October 30, 2022/2 Comments/in Zenith/by Joshua Munchow

The Zenith Defy Skyline is loosely based around the historical Defy, which had a faceted bezel (arguably the very first octagonal steel sports watch in 1969), but the Skyline switches it up to a dodecagon (12-sided polygon) and a bolder case silhouette. And this is not the only reason Joshua Munchow is so enamored.

Fiona Krüger Vanitas: A Skull Clock That Yawns To Indicate Becoming Tired And Needing More Energy – Reprise

October 29, 2022/0 Comments/in Highlights, Clocks, Fiona Krüger, Independents/by Joshua Munchow

The skull is one of art history’s most referenced objects thanks to its powerful ability to instantly remind us that we are only flesh and bone. Fiona Krüger, specializing in skulls, partnered with L’Epée 1839 to produce Vanitas, a skull-shaped clock based on her Skull Collection with an unexpected function: it yawns as its movement tires.
