The meteoric rise of Nomos over the past years is partially due to the fact that the Glashütte-based watch brand is always up for a good surprise.
Although only about a quarter of a century old, Nomos is already the largest manufacturer of mechanical watches in Germany and enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide.
The owner-operated manufacture with 300 employees offers 12 model families containing close to 100 watch variations – these are mechanical timepieces generally housed in stainless steel and ranging in average price from €1,000 to €5,000.
“High-tech and traditional craftsmanship combined with the best design and the desire to offer watches at reasonable prices,” is the winning formula according to Uwe Ahrendt, Nomos’s managing director.
As the brand continues what seems to be its unstoppable run, let’s take a quick look at the most recent milestones of the “Nomos phenomenon.”
A full-blown manufacture since 2005, Nomos introduced an in-house designed and manufactured oscillating system called the “Swing System” in 2014 (see Bravo, Nomos Glashütte! How The Metro Will Change The Watch Game for full details). This was a real sensation since the majority of watch brands source regulators from the same few specialized producers in Switzerland.
Designing and serially producing the Swing System regulator was a true declaration of independence for Nomos that only a handful of companies can boast.
Two years ago, the latest in-house self-winding movement, Caliber DUW 3001, took center stage in the new neomatik series (see more in Nomos Glashütte Neomatik: A Sensibly Priced, Efficient, Fashionable, And Mechanically Sound Tribute To The Past And Future Of Glashütte).
Measuring a mere 3.2 millimeters in height, the DUW 3001 movement, also fitted with the proprietary Swing System escapement, is both notably flat for an automatic caliber and very precise.
Needless to say that Caliber DUW 3001 is a product of meticulous production practices and includes some highly sought-after characteristics of fine timekeeping à la Glashütte, including the Glashütte three-quarter plate, Glashütte sunburst decoration, and tempered blue screws.
Nomos Glashütte Aqua: this year’s news
At first glance the big news for 2017 might not look as “breaking” as the Swing System, however the Aqua series, based on the core models Club and Ahoi – the first being the brand’s entry-level model, the latter being Nomos’s first water-resistant timepiece, introduced in 2013 – testifies to a smart product policy and offers surprisingly large variety to customers.
And this new set of watches comprising 16 timepieces comes right in time for all kinds of summer splashing fun. There are new diameters suitable for both men and women (all of Nomos Glashütte’s watches are unisex) in four eye-catching colors – white, black, red, and blue – two of which are new.
Water-resistant to 200 meters, the Aqua models are equipped with extra-robust stainless steel cases including a crown guard and transparent sapphire crystal case back secured with six screws.
While “Atlantic blue” has been a color constant in Nomos’s dial palette for a while now, the new versions of Club and Ahoi with so-called “Siren blue” (“signalblau”) and “Siren red” (“signalrot”) faces add a vibrant note to the collection.
Nomos fittingly draws the parallel to the sky over the Côte d’Azur and a buoy floating far out to sea, evoking images of the best of what summer has to offer. This is an apt description since the shades are of an intense hue and really pop on the wrist.
For readability in the dark, there are also luminous markers at each hour and the hands are lume-filled.
All of the dials feature a bright orange small second hand, matching the orange “neomatik” signature below the brand’s logo at 12 o’clock on those models.
The fancy woven textile strap, exclusively designed for the series and produced in France, further highlights the winning, youthful character of the timepieces and offers comfort: while the outside is robust, the finer weave on the inside feels great on the wrist.
Although it has the feel of a NATO strap, the look is much more elegant.
Ahoi is now available for the first time in a smaller, more classic size of 36 millimeters here in the neomatik version, whereas Club is also offered as an automatic watch with a diameter of only 37 millimeters thanks to the svelte nature of Caliber DUW 3001, which sets the pace inside.
However, the latter are powered by larger versions of the movement, DUW 5001 and the DUW 5101. The tiny stroke of genius, the Swing System, ticks away within every watch of this collection.
