Chopard is a perennial favorite of the rich and famous in cinema, fashion, and red-carpet events. But I have never seen watches and jewelry by this Geneva maker of the extraordinary take on such a starring role in a movie as Chopard does in the musical Elton John biopic Rocketman.
Though I suppose it shouldn’t be quite that mystifying as Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele is a personal friend of the singer, and the two have often co-organized events for charity – among them, Chopard’s many years of supporting the Elton John AIDS Foundation, which was founded in 1992. The foundation has to date raised more than $400 million.
“Elton John is a very dear friend of mine, hugely gifted in his talent, whether it is in his music, which I absolutely love, or his style and persona,” Scheufele said. “Rocketman emphasizes further just how much of an inspiration Sir Elton is, through his incomparable panache and story. I was delighted to participate in this movie and wanted to ensure that Chopard jewelry and watch creations would help transform actor Taron Egerton into Sir Elton John!”
The film revolves around “Reg’s” extravagant life – John’s real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight – a big part of which is his fashion (in 2015, he was even named one of GQ’s 50 best-dressed British men – as was Egerton). So it’s not surprising that the 72-year-old singer has been a well-known jewelry and watch collector, and one who has already purged his jewelry box twice via Sotheby’s London (1988 and 1993), perhaps to make room for new acquisitions. In the film, John’s character admits to being addicted to shopping among other things during therapy.
Egerton appears on screen wearing numerous Chopard creations from the Happy Hearts, Happy Diamonds, Happy Spirit, Happy Sport, and Animal World high jewelry lines.
These sparkling works complement the whimsical and, yes, eccentric look the pop singer adopted following a relatively introverted childhood as described in the biopic. They also reflect the artist’s metamorphosing lifestyle as he rose to extreme heights of success. But it is important to note that the items seen in the film are not the original watches and pieces of jewelry John owned at the time. They are interpretations chosen by the film’s costume designer, Julian Day.
But not only Egerton, playing Elton John, got to wear beautiful Chopard items on set. Bryce Dallas Howard, who plays John’s oddball mother in the film, is also blessed with showcasing some lovely sparklers – among them a pink gold Happy Sport watch that was part of 2018’s twenty-fifth anniversary of Happy Sport collection.
These animated watches feature mobile diamond settings that hurry and scurry across the dial with every movement of the wrist. For the anniversary, Chopard also introduced a new automatic manufacture movement specially developed for these smaller watches close to 30 mm in diameter: Caliber 09.01 C.
In case you haven’t yet seen Rocketman, I can highly recommend this psychedelic musical trip down memory lane. And not only for its exuberant fashion.
