Ressence introduced the Type 2 e-crown as a concept watch in 2018, and by early 2019 the brand was ready with production models of the futuristic timepiece.
The Watches TV’s Marc André Deschoux interviews Benoît Mintiens, founder and CEO of Ressence, whose Type 2 e-crown is 100 percent mechanical but features an automated crown that automatically winds and sets the time.
It’s worth repeating: the Ressence Type 2 e-crown is powered by a mechanical automatic movement, but its e-crown stops the movement when the watch is taken off. So, really, it never needs to be wound again.
“This is a watch for my generation and those that come after us,” Mintiens explains. It certainly combines the best of all possible worlds in terms of timekeeping: mechanics, emotion, and extreme precision using modern-day digital technology.

What has never been explained is how does the watch keep time when the mechanical part is stopped. Is there a quartz module in there? Or does it have to be paired with a smartphone?
