Creating a successful ladies’ watch is not easy: a ladies’ watch has to have elegance that transcends time and ideally a distinct design setting it apart from its peers.
However, nothing too outrageous. To be successful, a ladies’ watch should both appeal to the brand’s existing clients and attract new ones. In short, it is a high wire balancing act, but an essential one to master as women represent an ever increasing market segment.
For Tutima, the answer to this equation is the Saxon One Lady, which features a distinctive cushion-shaped case with an intricate design.
With its round bezel and a sloped strap/bracelet attachment, the Saxon One Lady offers multiple surfaces at different angles and with contrasts augmented by alternating polished and satin-finished surfaces that maximize the play of light.
This is also carried over onto the mother-of-pearl dial that adds an array of subtle color tones to the light show.
To quartz or not to quartz
When men talk about watches, the only option for the movement usually seems to be mechanical.
Women generally approach this quite differently. While some have a profound passion for mechanical movements, women often tend to place more emphasis on the overall design than the sum of its parts, and are generally more open to the benefits that a quartz movement offers.
So Tutima offers the Saxon One Lady with both automatic and quartz movements. At 34 mm, the quartz version is two millimeters smaller than its mechanical sibling and lacks a second hand, which makes its battery-powered nature less obvious. Not to mention lowering the retail price by about half.
For lovers of mechanical movements, the robust automatic caliber with its appealing oscillating weight with the Tutima logo in a gold seal is proudly displayed through the sapphire crystal case back.
Putting Tutima’s Saxon One Lady through its paces
Tutima designed both the Saxon One Lady and Saxon One Lady S (as the quartz version is called) to be everyday companions. While they have an elegance that goes as easily with jeans as with evening wear, they are also not afraid of more sportive endeavors and feature screw-down crowns, sapphire crystals, and an impressive 100 meters’ worth of water resistance.
While Tutima does not (yet?) offer the Saxon One Lady in precious metal – except for a custom 18-karat gold piece destined for the Middle East, which I had a chance to see during a trip to Tutima’s factory in Glashütte in the summer of 2019 – one can opt to have the bezel set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The beauty of this watch is that the diamonds do add something, but that the watch really doesn’t need it.
This says a lot about the power of the design, which I attribute mainly to the unique cushion-shaped case. Its height is also on par, coming in at 10.7 mm for the automatic and 9 mm for the quartz version, giving the watch a bit of “body” without making it oversized, therefore finding the perfect balance between being a sports watch and a more elegant creation.
Both models are available on either a stainless steel bracelet with H-shaped links or a variety of leather straps.
It’s hard to favor one over the other: the bracelet adds character, while the leather straps add elegance. The latter also benefits from the mother-of-pearl dial as the color of the strap seems to bring out the color in this natural material.
Despite that, Tutima has kept the number of variations available for the Saxon One Lady relatively limited, so it’s easy to pick the one you like best, allowing you to get it out of the shop and onto your wrist with minimum dilemma.
