5 Celebrity Wrist Checks Featuring Nicholas Hoult/Jaeger-LeCoultre, Aldis Hodge/MB&F, Miralem Pjaniç/Corum, And Lionel Messi/Jacob & Co

by Elizabeth Doerr

Watch spotting on celebrity wrists can be a lot of fun if you’re watching a movie or TV show.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’s always a lot of fun.

February was packed with a great deal of watch spotting thanks to the Oscars and other awards shows. In the aftermath of all that glamour, a few other watches on wrists have stood out to me including these five below.

Nicholas Hoult: personally engraved Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Large Small Second

It’s been fun watching young Mr. Hoult evolve as an actor over the years, beginning with his early role as Marcus Brewer in 2002’s touching About a Boy at the age of 11, through his turn as a love-stricken teenage zombie in 2013’s quirky Warm Bodies, and on to box office smashes like X-Men: Days of Future Past, in which he plays the younger version of Beast (a role he has subsequently reprised several times).

Nicholas Hoult in Venice

Hoult, a self-professed watch enthusiast, has been a Jaeger-LeCoultre friend of the brand for about four years, even attending 2019’s SIHH.

Jaeger-LeCoultre recently shared photos of Hoult’s Reverso Classic Large Small Second, which is personalized with an engraving of his two-year old son’s initials. “I engraved the initials ‘HKH’ as a way to honor my son and keep him close to me every day,” said Hoult. “Timepieces have a tradition in my family of being passed down between generations. I am excited to pass along this watch to my son one day.”

Hoult added that his interest in watches began through his own father’s fascination with timepieces.

Amanda Seyfried: personally engraved Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Reverso Classic Medium Thin

Amanda Seyfried, known for her performances in Hollywood blockbusters Les Misérables (2012) and 2008’s Mamma Mia!, has been a friend of Jaeger-LeCoultre since 2019 when she, too, attended SIHH 2019.

Seyfried chose an engraved reproduction of her dog Finn on the flip side of her lovely Reverso, stating that he has been a constant companion and lucky charm since she rescued him from an animal shelter almost a decade ago.

Coincidentally, our own Ian Skellern also had an animal (a horse) engraved on the back of a Reverso he bought for his wife; read that story in Why I Bought My Wife An Engraved Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique.

Aldis Hodge: MB&F LM 2 Ti

The Invisible Man reboot, a science fiction horror thriller that I am dying to see, is opening around the globe this week, with its world premiere taking place in Los Angeles on February 24, 2020.

Watch designer and Hollywood actor Aldis Hodge co-stars in The Invisible Man and turned out at the premiere in an ultra-stylish teal plaid double-breasted suit paired with both his signature black diamond necklaces and a timepiece borrowed for the occasion, which was nothing short of perfect here: the MB&F LM 2 Ti with an outstanding teal-colored dial.

Though an excellent detail, the color of the LM2’s dial is not the important point: MB&F’s Legacy Machine No. 2 is a watch in a league of its own thanks to its two balances connected by a differential that mesmerizingly oscillate suspended above the dial like a micro-mechanical Cirque du Soleil. It is simply stunning – and I am doubly inspired that Hodge thinks so as well, though his excellent taste in watches should no longer surprise me (see Aldis Hodge’s Personal Photos Of The Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30° Technique Sapphire At The 2017 Oscars).

Miralem Pjaniç: diamond-set Corum Golden Bridge

In perhaps the most interesting celebrity spot over the last couple of weeks, Corum has announced Juventus Turin midfielder Miralem Pjaniç. The 29-year-old Bosnian, who began his career in Luxembourg when his family moved there at the outbreak of the Bosnian War, has been playing for Juve since 2016.

“Despite his fame and success, he has always remained true to himself and that is something that we at Corum strongly believe in,” says Boon Chong Soon, Corum’s global sales and marketing director. “His belief in ‘the simple things are always the hardest to do’ is perfectly in line with our core collection of the Golden Bridge, which may look simple but is in fact much more complicated to achieve than a normal watch.”

Pjaniç has chosen a large white gold Golden Bridge set with two rows of diamonds (180 diamonds/1.05 ct) around the bezel – typically an unusual choice for a man, but definitely a very noticeable one.

Lionel Messi: Jacob & Co. Epic X Chrono Baguette Messi

And speaking of footballers and their love of diamond-set timepieces, check out Lionel Messi during a Dubai Expo 2020 event sporting the first timepiece from his official collaboration with Jacob & Co., which was announced in January 2019 upon signing a three-year contract.

Messi, who is currently a forward at FC Barcelona, is widely considered one of the best soccer players in the history of the game.

The Epic X dedicated to him is a 36-piece limited edition timepiece made in a blue-and-white color scheme to symbolize the flag of his home country, Argentina. A large red number 10 is placed on the flange – his jersey’s number – and an M can be seen just above the 6 o’clock position.

At 47 x 15 mm in size, this white gold and titanium watch is anything but a shrinking violet. And the 36 baguette-cut diamonds (4.55 ct) only enhance its boldness. It takes a lot of confidence to wear and get away with wearing a watch like this.
