About Elizabeth Doerr

I am the co-founder of Quill & Pad and was editor-in-chief until December 31, 2022. Specialized in horological publishing since my first Basel Fair in 1991, I have contributed to magazines, newspapers and websites too numerous to recount here.

My primary focus remains on the technical side of high watchmaking where progress meets tradition, but I often also profile the colorful personalities and historical elements that make up this surprisingly diverse and compelling world of ticks and tocks.

It is more than time for women to be heard as consumers. It remains a mystery to me as to why the majority of watches aimed at women today are still designed by men!

The inaugural Eve’s Watch Awards has done a great job bringing the spotlight to the female wrist. Please read on to find out who were the big winners at the 2016 edition held at The Shard in London.

Book Review: ‘The Magic Of Watches’ By Louis Nardin

October 27, 2016/7 Comments/in Book reviews/by Elizabeth Doerr

What strikes me again and again about Louis Nardin is his enviable energy and passion for the subject of watchmaking. ‘The Magic of Watches’ is one of the best books on the subject: it is written in easy, clear, and down-to-earth language. This would surely make for the perfect holiday gift.

Ryan Schmidt is a newly engrossed watch enthusiast – and his enthusiasm and knowledge permeates the tone of his book, a comprehensive tome called ‘The Wristwatch Handbook.’

Fabergé’s Lady Levity Combines Original Mechanics With Unique Design

October 19, 2016/3 Comments/in Fabergé, Ladies watches/by Elizabeth Doerr

Attention: if you just take a casual glance at Fabergé’s Lady Levity you will probably miss it. It is only when you step back and look carefully that the full artistic complexity of the dial is revealed: the man-in-the-moon motif at the center of Lady Levity’s dial. But this is no ordinary man in the moon . . .

You Are There: HYT, Alinghi, And The Extreme Sailing Series In Lisbon

October 16, 2016/4 Comments/in Sports, HYT/by Elizabeth Doerr

Wind rushing through your hair. Sun kissing your face. Refreshing water beads cooling you off. Sailing can be somewhat addictive, especially in gorgeous locations like Lisbon, Portugal. But perhaps not quite as addictive as the timepieces that HYT has created to honor its sailing partner, Alinghi: the H2 and H4 Alinghi editions.

Back In Black: Armin Strom’s Bold Edge Double Barrel With Refined, Novel Finish

October 13, 2016/2 Comments/in Highlights, Armin Strom/by Elizabeth Doerr

Armin Strom is perhaps the most underrated Swiss watch brand active today. But this year the Edge Double Barrel does it for the Biel-based brand by making a bold, successfully contemporary statement at a time in modern horological history when the only thing shrinking faster than case diameters are consumers’ disposable incomes.

Wayde van Niekerk had barely had time to catch his breath since his astounding Olympic win and new world record in the 400-meter race at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Soon after the Olympics, van Niekerk found himself in Paris on a beautiful early fall day with Richard Mille . . . and me.

Gustafsson & Sjögren (GoS) Introduces Sarek And, Surprisingly, A First Ladies’ Watch

September 21, 2016/5 Comments/in GoS, Independents, Ladies watches/by Elizabeth Doerr

Back at Baselworld 2016, the duo known as Gustaffson & Sjögren (GoS) surprised me with a new watch named Sarek. Its most obvious element is, of course, the beautiful dial made of Damascus steel. The Sarek dial is created from 164 layers of hand-forged steel. The unusual coloring is partially achieved by tempering the steel until the desired colors display.
