The Oscillon Fundamentum is a basic, time only watch that should fly perfectly under the radar and appear to many as a simple, classically modern watch. But that belies it’s nearly totally handmade perfection.
I know of only three watchmakers making watches completely (no CNC machines) by hand today: Greubel Forsey with its Hand Made 1 and Dominique Buser and Cyrano Devanthey, who are hand-making watches they call l’Instant de Vérité under the umbrella of their own micro brand Oscillon. And what a watch this is!
Oskar Pascal is the brainchild of a pair of Swedish brothers who were neither previously involved in the watch industry nor are they watchmakers. The engineer and designer have created a cleanly designed chronograph housed within the world’s first watch case in ZR01, an amorphous alloy based on zirconium, one of the hardest metals in the world and even used by NASA. In his previous article on the Time Aeon Le Garde Temps project, Joshua Munchow poetically compares the development of this wristwatch to an epic quest. At the time I didn’t appreciate just how true the analogy is, though perhaps not so much a hero’s quest as a band-of-brothers journey. And what a journey it’s turning out to be.
