Watch Journalism In 2018: What’s Wrong, How To Improve . . . And Why The Biggest Problem Is YOU

January 29, 2018/25 Comments/in Thoughts & Opinion/by Ian Skellern

There are two main problems in watch journalism as I see things today – and this is from the viewpoint of a watch enthusiast, watch collector, (former) watch brand social media manager, watch publisher, watch photographer, and watch journalist: 1) low average quality of horological articles and 2) often obscure incentives. What might be done? Here are some possible answers.

To honor Walter Lange’s life and legacy, A. Lange & Söhne organized a really organic live round table conversation during the 2018 SIHH to remember the great man that included our own Elizabeth Doerr and GaryG. Watch the video here!

New Time Aeon Foundation Handmade Watch Project: Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey And Felix Baumgartner With Urwerk’s Dominique Buser And Cyrano Devanthey On The Tools

January 18, 2018/1 Comment/in Greubel Forsey, Urwerk/by Ian Skellern

In his previous article on the Time Aeon Le Garde Temps project, Joshua Munchow poetically compares the development of this wristwatch to an epic quest. At the time I didn’t appreciate just how true the analogy is, though perhaps not so much a hero’s quest as a band-of-brothers journey. And what a journey it’s turning out to be.

Grab Your Hoverboard And Fire Up The DeLorean: The Urwerk UR-105 CT Streamliner Takes Us Back To The Future (Where It May All End)

January 1, 2018/4 Comments/in Urwerk/by Ian Skellern

When Urwerk launched the UR-105 CT Streamliner in September 2017, the year of the trendsetting brand’s twentieth anniversary, it certainly made waves in the horological press; however, I couldn’t help feel that it was a little underappreciated and perhaps in the shadow of Urwerk’s “Reverso interpretation,” which launched earlier in the year, the widely successful UR-T8. Here’s what you should know about the CT Streamliner.

End-Of-Year Cheer From MB&F: Watches Stolen Earlier In 2017 Recovered, 3 Countries Involved

December 22, 2017/7 Comments/in Highlights, MB&F/by Ian Skellern

This is a bit of an unusual article, but the story surreptitiously fell into my lap(top) just days before Christmas, and I thought that there is no better time of the year for publishing good news. Charris Yadigaroglou, MB&F head of communication, told me the happy ending to a scary incident earlier in the year at the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery in Geneva.

The “Industrialization Of Arts & Crafts”: Is This The Unspoken Tagline Of Many (Most?) Haute Horlogerie Brands Today?

December 20, 2017/5 Comments/in Watch Brands & Horology, Highlights, Thoughts & Opinion/by Ian Skellern

There was a small horological polemic recently out of Geneva caused by an employment advert from a high-end watch brand looking for a “chargé d’industrialisation métiers d’art.” First they industrialized horological crafts, now it’s the arts. What’s next?

Urwerk Vs. MB&F: How Do They Square Up?

December 5, 2017/3 Comments/in MB&F, Urwerk/by Ian Skellern

Urwerk and MB&F are two stalwarts of contemporary watchmaking with, superficially at least, much in common. Here Ian Skellern shares what he thinks are the significant similarities and differences between these two leaders in modern watchmaking.
