Welcome To The First Quill & Pad Photo Caption Competition

December 26, 2015/8 Comments/in Highlights, Photo Captions/by Ian Skellern

We see a lot of photos here at Quill & Pad that have us scratching our heads, not all of which are of watches. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these images are destined to remain digitally encoded on a hard drive tucked away in a cupboard, probably never to be seen again. So for your (hopeful) enjoyment we have decided to start a photo caption competition in which we publish an image. The following Saturday we will publish the best caption (or captions) received for a lot of lighthearted fun.

Roger Smith Series 4 Triple Calendar: Excellence In Hand-Crafted English Watchmaking

November 27, 2015/3 Comments/in Highlights, Roger W Smith/by Ian Skellern

The Isle of Man’s Roger Smith has long had an appreciation for triple calendar wristwatches, finding harmonious balance and purity in the triple calendar indications of day, date, and month. Having successfully redeveloped the George Daniels-invented co-axial escapement to be both smaller and more efficient, the time was right to introduce a new model: The Series 4 triple calendar.

Inside A Second: Chronograph Exhibition Featuring Many Of The Most Important Chronographs Ever Made

November 21, 2015/0 Comments/in Highlights, Events, Fairs & Exhibitions, Rolex, Seiko, Tag Heuer, Vacheron Constantin, Vintage, Zenith/by Ian Skellern

Among the many highlights of SalonQP 2015 was the “Inside a Second” exhibition of chronographs presented in partnership with the Foundation de la Haute Horlogerie. The exhibition included the George Daniels co-axial four-minute tourbillon with Daniels’ compact chronograph mechanism. And that would have been enough chronograph for me all by itself, but there were many more highlights.

Heartbeat: Unique Piece Platinum Parallax Tourbillon by Grönefeld

November 16, 2015/1 Comment/in Highlights, Grönefeld/by Ian Skellern

I’m just back from an excellent SalonQP 2015. The exhibition was awash with fantastic timepieces, but here’s one that caught my eye: a unique piece Parallax Tourbillon in platinum with black dial and bright red highlights by Bart and Tim Grönefeld, two excellent fraternal watchmakers from the Netherlands.

Why Legacy Machine Perpetual Catapults MB&F Into The Big League

November 12, 2015/16 Comments/in MB&F/by Ian Skellern

I’m all for evolution, especially continual evolution in watchmaking. However, from time to time we need revolution as well as evolution, and the former is severely lacking. While MB&F’s Legacy Machine Perpetual looks to all intents and purposes like one of the least radical timepieces created in the brand’s ten-year history, make no mistake: it is revolution, not evolution.

Why The International Chronometry Competition Needs To Change Format Or Sink Into Total Irrelevance

November 7, 2015/4 Comments/in Events, Fairs & Exhibitions, Louis Moinet/by Ian Skellern

A watch for me isn’t just a portable three-dimensional sculpture or piece of kinetic art, it is first − if not foremost − an instrument for telling the time. Like you, I’ve excitedly followed the animated discourse and heated debate after the results of the 2015 Chronometry Competition were announced. Oh, you missed that? Me too.
