Steve McQueen, The Set Of ‘Le Mans,’ And A Surprising Cartier Tank

In the 1968 film ‘The Thomas Crown Affair,’ Steve McQueen played the title character, a millionaire businessman and avid sportsman involved in a cat-and-mouse game with an insurance claims investigator played by Faye Dunaway. McQueen chose two of his personal watches to wear in the film: an elegant Cartier Tank Cintrée and a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox. But when Nick Gould looked further into this, he discovered that contrary to popular opinion McQueen also surprisingly owned a Tank.

The first spinoff film from The Fast and the Furious franchise, ‘Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw,’ is set for worldwide release on August 2, 2019. It features two great characters from the previous films: Luke Hobbs played by Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Deckard Shaw played by Jason Statham. Both Johnson and Statham are known to be watch lovers and frequently wear their own timepieces in movies. Here Nick Gould identifies what’s on their wrists in the film.

‘Apocalypse Now’ Was Not The First Time Marlon Brando Wore A Rolex GMT-Master Without Bezel: Phillips ‘Game Changers’ Auction’s Star Lot

On the set of ‘Apocalypse Now’ Marlon Brando said, “If they’re looking at my watch, then I’m not doing my job as an actor.” The filmmakers let him wear the Rolex GMT-Master he was set on wearing, but he removed the bezel, resulting in the unique-looking timepiece closely associated with the Colonel Kurtz character. And now that watch is up for auction at Phillips.

With Wimbledon 2019 well underway, Nick Gould has noticed that champion tennis player Serena Williams has been wearing a 37 mm Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph in stainless steel with a diamond bezel. But he also noticed something peculiar about the way Williams is wearing her watch: she has been wearing it upside down while playing!

Filming on the new, and still untitled, 25th film in the James Bond series has now shifted to London, and footage appearing in the media has confirmed the reappearance of the Aston Martin V8 from ‘The Living Daylights’ as well as the movie’s star Daniel Craig in more scenes in a suit and tie while sporting a split lip and bruised knuckles.
