Yamazaki 12-Year-Old Japanese Whisky: Why Pricing Has Gone Through The Roof

September 18, 2021/11 Comments/in Wining, Dining and Cigars/by Ken Gargett

Yamazaki 12-Year-Old from Japan is a whisky that Ken Gargett has loved every time he has had the chance to try it. The bottle he sampled for this piece was actually one from the back of his cupboard, which he has been sitting on for far too long. When a mate saw it, he implored him not to open it. But Ken of course did and shares the experience with us here.

Talking Watches And Guitars With The Legendary John McLaughlin: From Miles Davis To Mahavishnu And Now Only Watch

September 15, 2021/26 Comments/in Arts, Collectors and Collecting/by Colin Alexander Smith

After Colin Alexander Smith recently noticed John McLaughlin wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in live footage from the 1990s along with various other interesting timepieces, he somewhat cheekily asked him for an interview to discuss his watches rather than his music or his guitars, to which he kindly agreed. Not surprisingly they ended up discussing all three in this riveting interview spanning decades’ worth of music, stories, and timepieces.

September 14, 2021/0 Comments/in Wining, Dining and Cigars/by Ken Gargett

Normally Ken Gargett would not highlight a retailer/supplier, but Dekanta offers special limited edition Japanese whiskies as well as many of the harder-to-find bottlings. And he does think this Asaka Aoi Edition Single Cask is a very fine whisky and definitely worth a look.

Cohiba Lancero Cuban Cigars: Talked About Far More Than Smoked

September 7, 2021/3 Comments/in Highlights, Wining, Dining and Cigars/by Ken Gargett

Cohiba Lancero is arguably the most famous cigar of all. It is, however, a cigar that is talked about far more than it is smoked. Why? With measurements of 7½ inches and a ring gauge of 38 (not to forget the little pigtail at the end), it falls smack in the center of what the old timers call the “long and skinnies.” Ken Gargett explains why it’s worth a puff.

Breitling And Bentley Part Ways, But How Will They Move On? A Look At The Past And Possible Futures

August 29, 2021/3 Comments/in Highlights, Cars, Breitling/by Martin Green

After nearly 20 years, Breitling and Bentley are parting ways. Mumm RSRV R. Lalou 2006 Champagne: A Revelation (With Or Without Usain Bolt)

August 23, 2021/1 Comment/in Highlights, Wining, Dining and Cigars/by Ken Gargett

Mumm Champagne has wonderful history, but then for a period it seemed to descend into little more than a discount producer. More recently, there appeared to be a serious intent to return to the glory days when this house was seen as one of the greats. Ken Gargett thinks that Mumm’s RSRV R. Lalou 2006 is a revelation. Rich and complex with honeycomb notes and some butterscotch. Great length. Finely balanced.

Deeper, Further, Faster: Why Do Some Dive Watches Have Helium Escape Valves? – Reprise

August 22, 2021/8 Comments/in Watch Brands & Horology, Technology, Divers' Watches/by Ashton Tracy

Humans have long had a fascination with the depths of the ocean, striving to go ever deeper, ever further, and ever faster by pushing the limits of the human body, technology, and advancing modern science. But like all things, we are often faced with limits. And the helium escape valve was invented to push one of those limits as watchmaker Ashton Tracy explains.
