About Martin Green

I am the resident gentleman of Quill & Pad. A Dutch national with familial ties to the United States of America, I unwittingly landed in the world of watches just before I turned 18. My grandfather always had an interest in timepieces, and I decided that I would celebrate my eighteenth birthday with the purchase of my very first Swiss wristwatch. Little did I know that this would open a wormhole propelling me into a universe that I am now very happy to call home. I have a deep-rooted passion for watches. And while being a gentleman perfectly describes my approach to life, it does also require the development of eclectic knowledge that goes beyond beautiful timepieces. Therefore, I also enrich Quill & Pad with various watch and non-watch-related articles that are luxurious in nature, but which could nevertheless be quite interesting to watch-crazy readers.

Hublot Big Bang Millennial Pink And Zenith Defy El Primero 21 Pink Edition: Is Pink The New Blue? And Does It Even Matter?

August 10, 2020/8 Comments/in Highlights, Hublot, Zenith/by Martin Green

Hublot always seems to have a finger on the pulse of what is currently moving people. And in this spirit the brand has recently launched a ‘gender-neutral’ Big Bang in a color marketed as ‘Millennial Pink.’ And Zenith has also recently announced a Zenith Defy El Primero 21 Pink Edition, both of which have prodded Martin Green into taking a dive into ‘gender-neutral watches.’ And he wonders why there aren’t more of them.

Hermès Arceau Harnais Français Remix: Colorful Horseplay

August 3, 2020/0 Comments/in Highlights, Hermès, Ladies watches/by Martin Green

For the Hermès Arceau Harnais Français Remix, Hermès’ watch designers found inspiration in a pair of beautifully harnessed horses that formed the centerpiece of a silk scarf designed by Hugo Grykar, who served as the brand’s in-house designer from the 1940s until 1959. The dial is engraved Limoges porcelain painstakingly decorated with colorful oven-fired enamel. And the result is a wearable work of art!

Purnell Escape II Double Tourbillon: Double Triple-Axis Spherical Tourbillons At That!

July 27, 2020/0 Comments/in Highlights, Independents/by Martin Green

Complicated haute horlogerie doesn’t get much better than twin triple-axis spherical tourbillons as found in the Purnell Escape II Double Tourbillon. And while in some cases less is more, here more is definitely more. The tourbillons are mesmerizing in part thanks to their high rotation velocity; they make full revolutions in respectively 8, 16, and 30 seconds. What is behind this masterful piece of high watchmaking?

Three New Bell & Ross Vintage BR V2 Watches For 2020: For Officers, Gentlemen, And Rebels

July 20, 2020/0 Comments/in Highlights, Bell & Ross/by Martin Green

Inspired by military watches, the designs of these three new Bell & Ross BR V2 models are not loud, but they are distinct in addition to being highly legible. Martin Green also points out that the names of Bell & Ross watches sometimes read like designations for some type of bomb, but he gives them a pass on that because he thinks that their watches are dynamite. Especially these. Have a look.

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Tiger: So Lifelike You Expect It To Leap From The Dial

July 13, 2020/2 Comments/in Highlights, Jaquet Droz/by Martin Green

When Martin Green first saw athe Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Tiger he thought that Jaquet Droz had used a photorealistic print on the dial, so real was the miniature enamel painting for him. The artist focused on the eyes of the tiger, and its gaze is so lifelike and filled with restrained power that it is almost scary. It looks like it’s about to pounce right off the dial!

June 22, 2020/2 Comments/in Watch Brands & Horology, Highlights, Breguet, Bulgari, Hublot/by Martin Green

Watch bracelets are often as underrated as housekeeping in a good hotel: they are commonly taken for granted. Collectors usually focus on the shape of the case and look of the dial first, with the movement coming in a close second. Here Martin Green takes a closer look at four new watches of 2020 whose full-metal bracelets significantly change the look of them.

Cartier, Hublot, And Louis Erard: When Time Takes A Backseat To Art

June 16, 2020/2 Comments/in Highlights, Cartier, Hublot/by Martin Green

What happens when form dominates function nearly completely and the watch itself becomes a canvas for art? What if artistic freedom can be enjoyed without time being the primary purpose? Martin Green highlights three great examples here.

IWC CEO Christoph Grainger-Herr thinks that the COVID-19 pandemic will have a lasting effect. “The digital proximity we are experiencing right now may have a lasting effect on how we communicate with our customers, partners, and journalists. I think it is likely that we will put an even bigger emphasis on video content in the future.” Not only does Martin Green discuss this topic with the manager, he also discovers Grainger-Herr’s all-time favorite Portugieser.
