Quill & Pad’s editor-in-chief, Elizabeth Doerr, and resident gentleman, Martin Green, spontaneously decided to take a small road trip to test out some watches for a day and do a little sightseeing. The new Nomos Glashütte Autobahn was born out of a respect for the past and a respect for historic design ideas, but with an eye on current trends and a desire to try something a little new. How exactly does it do that? With gentle curves never before seen on a Nomos timepiece and especially the large luminous design on the dial.
I read my colleague Martin Green’s article on the Nomos Orion de Stijl in Ace Jewelers x Nomos: Celebrating 100 Years Of ‘De Stijl,’ first with interest then with incredulity. Can something that is highly functional also be art? If there is one brand that has proven — at least in watches — that functional objects can be art it is Nomos. The German company’s designs can are minimalistic, which leads to enormous focus on every minuscule detail. The ‘De Stijl’ version offered by Ace Jewelers in Amsterdam takes all of this even further in a limited edition that costs no more than the regular collection edition.
The classic dress watch gives you the same feeling that a good pair of perfectly fitting jeans or comfortable pullover does. For some of us, it might almost provide a sense of home. But most of all, it looks good in any situation. Here are Sabine Zwettler’s five favorite examples from 2017.
