To commemorate Stephen Hawking, English watch company Bremont created a set of limited-edition watches honoring the late theoretical physicist: the Bremont Hawking and Hawking Quantum models. As the brand’s tenth limited edition, the Hawking watches pay homage to some of the greatest accomplishments of an Englishman in the last century. And like that titan of cosmology, there is more than meets the eye here.
The Bremont H-4 Hercules’ rotor incorporates original birchwood veneer that flew on Howard Hughes’ historic trip in the ‘Spruce Goose’ off the coast of California in 1947. Shaped into four propeller blades, the precious and historical wood was shipped to the UK from the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville, Oregon, where the plane resides today. As the 35th America’s Cup rolls into the final month of its third year – by the end of June 2017 the competition will finally have a winner – Bremont introduces its third set of watches styled specifically in honor of the world’s oldest international sporting trophy.
Ronnie Wood, a celebrated painter outside the realm of his duties as guitarist for the Rolling Stones, explained that it was he who searched out a horological collaboration and very naturally came across Bremont as a British marque of note. “I Feel Like Painting” represents his second dial for Bremont’s B-1 Marine Clock.
Bremont kindly invited me to spend the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series race weekend in Toulon. We could hardly have gotten a better weekend for it and I got to wear the attractive and functional new Regatta AC model Bremont made in honor of the America’s Cup.
My biggest concern with the Jaguar F-Pace was actually with the styling: Jaguars have always been elegant creatures – and an SUV must be one of the least elegant automobiles there is. But in the capable hands of Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, who hates SUVs as much as I do, the result is a car that fits beautifully in Jaguar’s current lineup while maintaining a certain feline elegance.
