The Independent Watchmakers’ Struggle: Why It’s So Hard And What They Can Do

August 27, 2016/18 Comments/in Independents/by GaryG

I love independent watchmaking and independent watchmakers; one of my great joys as a collector is having the feeling that, in a small way, I am supporting their efforts.
So I put some thought into why independent watchmakers struggle in a business sense and how they can remain relevant in changing market situations.

Funky Colors For Emmanuel Bouchet’s Head-Turning Complication One

August 25, 2016/9 Comments/in Highlights, Emmanuel Bouchet, Independents/by Elizabeth Doerr

We are big fans of Bouchet’s work in general and the ingeniously complicated Complication One in particular. What we were shown at Baselworld 2016, though, was truly imaginative: funky new, definitely out-of-the-ordinary colors for such a serious and technical timepiece.

Jaguar F-Pace: C’mon, Bremont, Let’s See What You Can Do With This

August 23, 2016/3 Comments/in Highlights, Cars, Bremont/by Martin Green

My biggest concern with the Jaguar F-Pace was actually with the styling: Jaguars have always been elegant creatures – and an SUV must be one of the least elegant automobiles there is. But in the capable hands of Ian Callum, Jaguar’s design director, who hates SUVs as much as I do, the result is a car that fits beautifully in Jaguar’s current lineup while maintaining a certain feline elegance.

The A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst: I Can Just Feel It!

August 21, 2016/6 Comments/in A. Lange & Söhne/by Joshua Munchow

The A. Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk was already an icon of modern haute horlogerie thanks to its debut in 2008 of the first instantaneously jumping digital minutes and hours display. Little could anyone have predicted the release of the sensational Zeitwerk Handwerkskunst edition four years later.

Does Hand Finishing Matter? A Collector’s View Of Movement Decoration (Archive)

August 20, 2016/5 Comments/in Highlights, Collectors and Collecting/by GaryG

Like many people, my starting point for serious watches was with a well-priced brand long known for its expertise in developing movements, justly viewed as offering good value for money – but not necessarily for the refinement of its movement finishing, at least on its less expensive pieces. What have I learned since then?

Can’t Put Your Finger On It? Caption Competition #33

August 19, 2016/11 Comments/in Highlights, Photo Captions, MB&F/by Ian Skellern

I saw this “hand” with disconcertingly realistic fingers impatiently tapping at the MB&F M.A.D.Gallery in Geneva. Entitled “Fingers Mk III by Nik Ramage for Laikingland,” it is actually a piece of playful mechanical art. But what else might you use a handy device like this for? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

Richard Mille On 4 Athletes’ Wrists At The 2016 Rio Olympics

August 18, 2016/2 Comments/in Highlights, Sports, Richard Mille/by Elizabeth Doerr

As a sports fan, I have been keeping track of what’s going on at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. What has really caught my eye thus far is the fact that there have been four athletes wearing a wristwatch while competing in their various events . . . and all four are wearing Richard Mille timepieces.

My Vote For The 5 Ugliest Watches Ever

August 17, 2016/22 Comments/in Highlights, Collectors and Collecting/by John Keil

As the saying goes, “There’s an ass for every seat.” I still find it so hard to believe that some watch designs are ever even considered, much less actually produced and ultimately purchased. In fairness, the following list may not actually contain the five ugliest watches ever, but they sure aren’t easy on the eyes.
