My thoughts have turned to one major system that is always there, but generally hidden from sight: the movement. Here are a few of my favorites and why. And in the philosophy of putting my money where my mouth is, these movements have appeared in one or more watches that I’ve owned personally.

A. Lange & Söhne once again sponsored the most luxurious vintage car event in the world: the Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, which has taken place on gorgeous Lake Como in Italy since 1929. A. Lange & Söhne always creates a new movement for a new watch, the Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Mérite is no exception. The Tourbograph Perpetual Pour le Mérite features not only the fusée and chain, tourbillon, and split-seconds chronograph, but also adds the complex perpetual calendar and moon phase to the equation.
Why is this timepiece important from a holistic view of horological history?
